there hasn't been that many contradictions and generally everyone is just about saying the same thing
Go with the dkok and their codex but bring the imperial guard dex just in case.

The only condition is that you have the official FW model (no proxies unless it's an awesome scratch build) and own the IA book. Our philosophy is that if you have gone to the expense of buying these go ahead. The models are always beautiful and only add to the enjoyment of all involved.
I think this is a great start and it would be better if lots more clubs had this rule.

So, what's the point in there being IA lists if nobody is going to use them? I would never dream of telling someone they can't use a list. This is a game, people! If you have reached the point where you won't play a game if there is a chance you won't win, time to retire.

If you can keep your head, while all about you are losing their's, then you have probably completely misunderstood the situation!

For GW, the point of the IA lists is really quite simple. Buy more models. That's all there is to it.
And refusing to play against it has little to do with winning or losing, but a great deal to do with it not being a generally accepted part of 40K. Hell, even GW does not allow IA rules in their tournaments, something about them not being 'balanced' for regular games of 40K. So you're surprised that others don't want to play against something that the company producing it believes to be unbalanced? As for me, if I know IN ADVANCE that you want to use it and I've had an opportunity to go over the rules, I'll play against it. But just show up and say 'Hey, I'm gonna play DKoK." No, I'll play someone else, thank you very much.

In my experience, most people are fine with playing against an IA army list. It is rare to find tournaments that allow them though. I used to play the Armored Battle Group list back in 4th edition, and very seldom did people turn me down for a game.

Playing a game is consensual.
When I play a tabletop wargame I do not have to agree to play with X publishers rules or with certain minis.
Best practice is to discus issues with yoru gaming group.
For the record I would be fine playing with FW rules, most people I have played against would be fine with these too. Other groups are not so it's horse for courses really.

As always, ask for permission
Heck any game pretty much needs an agreement, for purposes of points, time, date, what type, etc
I know people who will never ever play you if you use a certain army/wotnot, official or not

I'm sure it varies from place to place. It seems that the gaming scene out here is pretty open to a lot of things.

There doesn't seem to be too much contradiction over the main idea that is "Ask first!" And besides, debate is healthy! There does seem to be a few varied view points, but there doesn't seem to be any one real answer, which was the reason I asked. I'd like the games I play to be fun, win or lose, and if I'm trying to play with an army that would cause tension, it's not really worth it for the sake of the game.
I like the idea of creating two lists and having them handy just in case there is some discrepancy, that seems the best compromise. Thanks again everyone!

Besides, maybe we'll get lucky and GW will authorize more than just Apocalypse from FW. I would love to play with/against some of the FW armies.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

Ask if you can use it. It's not super overpowered. If anything, it is over-costed. Just keep a roster handy from the regular IG codex, in case someone says no. Maybe they will say yes, if you describe it as IG but without the tanks.

Try to play them every chance you get. Ask every opponent and tourney organizer. I'm personally starting up the Tyrant's Legion from Badab 9 and once its playable I'm going to try to take it everywhere. Just spent 3 hours working out my astral claws colour scheme.
Hope your DkoK look cool. That's the important part.

BTW Anyone have an idea when IA6 will be updated to match the parent codices (IG and CSM)? They seem to have done IA5 and forgotten this one..

But wouldn't this be like saying I can field some of the ridiculous battle suits from the Tau page? Like for example there is one battle suit commander with a railgun on one arm and a shield generator on the other. I would say that thing shouldn't be put on the battlefield at all. Or would I be able to field Ion guns??? Or Fusion cascades??? LOL

Anybody that won't play against the IA DKoK army, causing you to change to Codex: IG, is in for a rude shock, as the Codex is CONSIDERABLY more pwerful

You mean the overpointed suits with subpar (or too short ranged) guns that take up valuable fast attack slots needed by a competitive/tournament Tau army?
Sure. I've played against those suits loads, as my mate has 6. They aren't overpowered at all, and look awesome!

@TheCadreofFi'rios - If you take a look at the DKoK codex, they seem pretty underpowered. You lose a lot of the strength of the IG, no vets, no stormtroopers, no ogryns, no ratlings. It's not about fielding super units just to gain an advantage, I'd be fighting marines mostly, and I don't see much chance of me pulling that off. I just really like their lore, and seeing guardsmen running straight into heavy bolters or the like just to get shot to pieces for the emperor sounds like a good time. Call me old fashioned...
