The game can still be standardized for both console and PC gaming quite easily. However, I'm not sure how it will work if its cross-platform game play, as someone mentioned earlier.....and being a veteran system builder and avid shooter fan for about 12 years now, PC gamers will DESTROY controller anchored console players. This game is already suppose to be about war..and PvP, so there's one glaring problem with cross-platform..and its been all but confirmed that ranged weapons will have to be aimed, giving PC gamers even more distinct advantage.

Depends, you might need to aim, but if the game calculates if you hit or not on each shot like a normal MMO does, that advantage may not be as great as it appears. From the vids we have seen so far, the game wasn't running at fps pace, so I'm not thinking there will be too great a difference. Maybe, only time will tell. My only concern with this news is, that seems quite an odd design method, I hope the game doesn't suffer for it, or THQ decided to cut corners as its looks like WOW and ToR will have most of the MMO sewn up by the time DMO is released.

Inquisitor Engel posted a lot more info:
A little birdy has dropped me some more info as well:
Game Design Notes:
- Relic is lending a very small hand in the overall development of dmo. Winking, a chinese based developer is also on board. They helped with Spacemarine as well.
- Vigil is doing 90% of the work. Most of the shared work load is art, and animation.
- Spacemarine is built on the same engine as darksiders (and darksiders 2 respectively)
- Dmo is using the same engine, with gameplay (at least combat) akin to Spacemarine.
- Contrary to what I was told, the art style is NOT like Spacemarine, rather the whole game is more like darksiders (1 & 2), very stylized. The videos released at the last E3 are fairly accurate to the current state of the art style. Less realistic.
- Revision to what I was told by the rep, is that Spring 2012 is unlikely... maybe for more announcements on the game's progress. Though a Darsiders 2 release in spring is likely, Vigil is working on both.
Class related notes:
- Races broadly put into forces of "Order" and "Disorder" similar to 40K World-wide campaigns.
- The "spacemarine" is a class, with a chaos counterpart.
- Tactical, heavy, assault as specialties.
- Each class starts as something familiar, and through progression changes.Ie. Scout to Marine
- Other classes include: psyker, techpriest, and assassin
- The assassin starts as a guardsman-esque character.
- Chaos have similar counterparts, cultist themed.
- Instead of an assassin, think demon host.
- Orks are with Chaos (disorder), Eldar are with the Imperium of man (order)
- Ork class rundown: Nob, mekboy, runt herda, mad dok
- Eldar class rundown: Scorpion, Avenger, Warlock, Reaper
- Expect Tau & Dark Eldar later, likely an expansion, though dark eldar npcs will be present on release, as well as Necron, and Tyranids. (Interesting idea, going for the 'faceless' races as NPCs, though I suspect you won't be getting quests from the Swarmlord!)
- 60 character levels.
Gameplay related notes:
- A crashed space hulk will be one of the zones.
- Another zone will take place on an Imperial Cruiser, and Chaos Cruiser.
- Expect several instanced missions much like WoW, as well as open world.
- It will include instanced & open world pvp.
- Players will be able to dual weild things like pistols and melee weapons... yes that means two chain swords.
- The featured chapter is Black Templars. (As evidenced by the banner art)
- The featured chaos god is Khorne, at least for playable
- Word Bearers will also take a major role in the Playable chaos faction
- Nurgle & Fabius Bile will have a big Chaos NPC presence. (I suspect not Nurgle himself, but perhaps Typhus?)
- Possible shooter/RPG mode controls, like StarTrek Online.
- Third person action, plays like Gears of War/Space Marine mixed together for shooting.
- Melee is more like Space Marine/Darksiders, with the target lock on.
- Blocking melee attacks is a maybe, sheilds may be NPC only.
- NPC creatures vary from: Necromunda like humans, Chaos Cultists, Dark Eldar; from Grotesques to Warriors, Chaos Daemons and beasts, Orks, Grots, Guardsmen, defected Guardsmen, most of the minor Demons, Dreadnoughts, Tyranid Warriors, Genestealers and more.
- Forgeworld things may be present. Thunderhawk, terrain sets, Aquila landers, FW-esque equipment on vehicles.
- Environments range from snowy mountains, to the innards of a crashed space hulk... from cities destroyed, and orkified, to ancient eldar cities, overgrown with nids... from ancient battlefields, littered with the carcases of Titans and tanks, to a hive city, nostalgic with necromunda.... from the halls of Imperial Cruisers, to tge desecrated throne rooms of Chaos.
- Everything is large, beefy, and sticks to 40k very well. People already invested in the background and game will progress at a snails pace, as we will be distracted by everything.
- Left mouse uses the weapon in your character's left hand, Right mouse uses the weapon in your character's right hand. Rather cool mechanic.
- All abilities have a cooldown... No spamminh your "3" key like most MMOs. This will likely annoy WoW diehards. This pleases me.
- Melee combos - dual weilding gives new moves
- There is sprinting.
- "Guilds" will be present.
- Team/party/squad size is 5
- "Raid" size is 50... subject to change.
- Ranged weapons have infinite ammo, but there is reloading, overheating, venting, and reloading.
- Weapons rarely get to take full advantage of their range when inside... lots of cover and turning corners, it's very dynamic.
- Hero classes are possible, unlocked once you get a character high enoigh level.
---- Imperium: Grey Knight
---- Chaos: Chaos Sorcerer
---- Ork: 'Ard boy or Weird boy
---- Eldar: Farseer
- Hero classes will begin at higher level...
- Likely 40.
A player progressing as a marine will do so as follows:
Lv. 0: an adept, think a marine wearing just carapace armor.
Lv. 10: more or less a scout.
Lv. 20: equipped like the marine character in th sm codex... forgot his name.
Lv. 30: a standard marine
Lv. 40 honor guard or Sergeant, some decoration
Lv. 50 sternguard, maybe captain.
Lv. 60 artificer armor, iron halos, the whole sha-bang.
Grey knight fits in fairly well at around 40.
Other classes progress similarly.
Misc. Notes
- Tech priest are very, very pure adeptus mechamicus themed...Backpacks with a robot arm.
- A cover system is implemented.Waist high cover and standing cover.
- Cross platform is very possible.
- Shooting mechanics will have aim assist
- Similarly, melee attacks will lock on.
- Abilities work similar to Warhammer Online. A common resource, then each class has a unique resource used with abilities.
- Weapons inxrease in "coolness" as far as progression is concerned.
- A lv. 1 autogun may be it's familiar form in necromunda and early IG... by lv 60, sone autoguns look cool enough for inquisitors to be using, lathered in fancy trim, aquilas, etc.
- Same goes for other weapons.... think Call of Duty, as you unlock the various weapon upgrades, you guns start looking cooler.
Each class has 3 specialties.
- Marine: Tactical, Devastator, Assault
- Assassin/guardsman: the major assassin type, callidus, vindicare, eversor (however you spell it)
- The Marine is by far the most flushed out.
- most abilities are still very WIP.
- Jump packs- not sure how they'll work

I agree but only if its done as fps games usually are.
This is a MMo so it may have different mechanics/gameplay/controls, if you think about it, it could also go the other way, where the controls and mechanics favour the console, though i sure hope not.

Thanks for the post Kroothawk. The game is looking more and more interesting.
Looks like there is going to be an emphasis on player actions over skillbars judging by the right hand/left hand mechanic and skill cooldowns.
I’ll probably play as an assult spec Chaos Space Marine, dual wielding chain axes and whatnot.

No Guardsmen? I guess it makes sense, but... bummer. Very big bummer. Guess it's Ork for me, if I get it.
It better occur on a multi-planet scale, though. I don't want to see a hundred Daemonhosts running around fighting a tenth of the Grey Knight chapter on Nowhereistan as twenty Warbosses bicker who's going to smash the dozen Lords of Chaos in the face.

QFT, 10 min into that game i was like...ok i get it...its a space marine game.
but really, this date does sound like either wishful thinking (on my part) or a dangerous rush to just get it out..ala vangaurd.
i desperately want to see this and to love it, but news on it is still so slow, its somewhat hard to believe its that close.
and ya, cross platform is not a good thing, it forces console type controls and hinders them having a great deal of depth (which mmo's seem to be moving away from anyways) things like space marine being cross platform is one thing, but mmo's is another.

Cross-platform MMO has been done before.
I see this is a way to attract more new comer into the world of War40k (so they will get suck into and become fanatics of GW ), especially since most of today video games are released as a console title in mind (it is a sad day for PC gamer )

Came to post this link.
Also, there would be no way, to begin with, that this game would come out 6 months from now. There has been *zero* Beta testing and that usually goes on for a year or more in the current MMO environment.
Cross platform is about the worst idea ever. Others have mentioned why, mostly it comes down to controls/UI options, etc. The FF series was a console, menu driven game to begin with. Making a PC game made it better. Taking a game like... WoW, or WAR, or Rift and porting to a console would be ridiculous and require massive amounts of work. Unless you had a keyboard for your console, a person would go insane trying to cycle through the abilities alone. God forbid you try to PvP.

I don't understand why companies keep making the same mistakes over and over again.. Releasing MMOs before they are ready is a death knell to them
This isnt 1999 anymore with everquest, players want mostly finished games or at least games that PLAY as if they are finished but are lacking some content at the start
I really hope they keep to the 2013 time frame. MMOs cost a lot of money and rushing them has been proven time and time again to be stupid

Things that I potentially don't like (haha no game yet but I know I don't like it, right??):
References to the game being gameplaywise 'like' Star Trek Online and WAR: These games were epic failures for a reason. WAR early play in particular was a real yawnfest as you still mashed three buttons... just more slowly and in order.
50 man raids. Oh boy. The problem with 50 man raids is that 1. only big guilds can do them with anything approaching regularity and/or 2. the content is either impossible to coordinate around for all but the most hardcore big guilds, or it's mind numbingly boring with the most difficult aspect being the organization of 50 warm bodies to hack through 'Boss #5's' 10 million hitpoints.
Fleshing out of Space Marines above/beyond other races. This results in massive faction population imbalance as MMOs have a tendency to both favor the more polished content and the 'good guys'. Big problem here from a world PvP standpoint and for the 'bad guy' economies in general. Anyone remember Tarren Mill circa 2005 on any of the 2:1 Alliance:Horde severs? Was totally stupid and sucked, yes? Yes.

The primary problem with WAR, was EA.
I beta tested WAR for a looooooooong time. The game that ended up being sent to the public was *not* the game we tested. Mythic got shafted by EA because Mythic needed more money to put out the game they wanted. EA gave them the cash, punched them in the crotch, and put WAR on the shelves.
EA stuck their fingers in the bowl and shoved it out the door. EA has destroyed a great number of MMO games since the dawn of time. Including the very first MMO I beta tested for them back in 1996-97.
As long as THQ remains strong, they can stand alone.

The main problem I have lies with being only black templars chapter for imperium... according to BT fluff and codex, they will not work or team up with Psykers of anykind unless they are GK... so how would this work I understand the mechanic but limiting customization of your marine to BT stuff is not going to bode well with many (see BA and SW players)
Though I like the assassin idea... though picking eversor as opposed to vindicare is gonna be rough lol

The reason it is just one chapter is because in the story the black templars are stuck on the planet, i would like to have a choice though tbh.

Templars as the only marine faction is awesome beyond belief. However, if the new BT codex would be released at the same time as the game, I hope they put the tabletop concerns above the video game and don't change the codex to fit better with the video game. Also, it would be awesome if they had missions where neophytes would work with a more experienced player who was an initiate.
