Just use the transfer cable, the odds of your actual Harddrive dying at the same time is slim, its just stuff inside the xbox that has died. I have had one RRoD, and one critical error, but have had a 360 since about three months after launch. I happily transfered my files over to new and bigger harddrive on the RRoD. With the critical error, I brought an arcade and put the harddrive into it from my dead machine. I've since got a 360 slim, and transfered it over there as well, the boys getting the old arcade for their room. The cable is worth it just for the odd emergancy. Going need it again next year when I get my R2 xbox.

You should still get a PS3. You could alternate between it and a 360 and make the new 360 last longer...
I saw used PS3s and 360s the other day at my local Record Store for $80.00!

Yeah no kidding. They are only just now starting to utilize the system. A lot of good games lately though.
Personally I like have access to all of them. It wasn't feasible 5 years ago, but it is now.

Thats because its a cartridge style system. Go ahead and try the CD attachment that you could get for it, see how far that gets you
