Just had it, and have an old xbox. Its around 5 years old, so cant get it returned by Microsoft.
My parents are going to buy a new one for me (whew), but is there a way for my savegames to get on the new one?

Yes, just copy the saves to a USB and transfer them over that way. It will have to be formatted for use with the 360 though.

What do you plan on doing with the xbox? I used to mod them for people in various ways, one was to fix the red rings. I could ship you some of my supplies if you want to take a shot at fixing it yourself.

That happened to the first two that I owned. The second time it happened I used to wrap it in towels whilst running for ten minutes and it worked fine for around ten minutes. Maybe long enough to copy your saves?

I was lucky/unlucky enough to own one of the first 1000 shipped to the UK, whilst I was looked after well by Microsoft customer services, I just didn't want to go through that storm again and bought a PS3 shortly after the second one went kablooey......

I just turned it off and on again...
Worked fine.
Got the RRoD about 5 times give or take...
Now the 2 red lights was a problem 'cos the overheating eventually set the damn thing on fire...

Your saves should be on the hard drive. Just put your hard drive on the new Xbox, or get a transfer cable to swap the files onto the new hard drive.

You can pop it open. This sorta goes hand in hand with my earlier post.

If you are certain it's beyond repair then you should be able to take the outer casing off and unscrew the disk drive. If you are careful then maybe you can take the disk drive apart?

I've never done this. But if it is truly shafted, then at least it will be fun picking it to pieces!

Google for 360 toweltrick and try it out, I've heard people being able to get some extra runtime from their RRoD 360 that way.
And the savegames are on your HDD, so just plug into another 360 or a computer if you have the correct equipment and retrieve them from there.
To get the DVD out, either unscrew the whole box, you could try sliding in a screwdriver and bend it open or remove the "blank casing" on the front of the drive, grab the tray and pull it out.

You should be able to just remove the hard drive for your saved games.
If you don't want to screw off the faceplate, it is possible to jam a butterknife in to open it. I had a friend whose xbox was a wreck (You literally had to stick it out the window, turn it on, and jam a butterknife through the disk slot to open it. If it would even turn on.) I don't recommend it, though.

Well you could put it in a freezer and try boot it after an hour or so. Although this won't give much time to save your saves (maybe 10 mins)

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Looks right. Follow this guide. You'll be able to fix your xbox and get the game out. At least you'll def get the game out.

I have personally fixed several 360s that have gotten the red ring of death. All it takes is the PDF guide I have and about 7-10$ of materials from your hardware store. If your interested in looking at the guide you can send me a PM with your email and I'll send it to you. If your just going to trash it(and live in the US) I'll take it off your hands!

You can try the 'Baking' technique like Sarpendons said although I wouldn't recommend doing it unless it is totally on it's last legs and you aren't going to attempt to fix it. Like Sarps says, you'll maybe be get 10 minutes out of it, hopefully enough time to transfer to your saves etc across.

You can buy kits off of ebay that come with guides on how to fix the RRoD. I repaired my Sons one a couple of times but eventually fixing it didn't work anymore and we had to buy him a new one. The updated versions don't, as far as I know, have the same issues with overheating. This is the one I used

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/E74-XCLAMP-FIX-KIT-4XBOX-360-RROD-P-H-PASTE-ISO-WIPES-/190582107820?pt=UK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN&hash=item2c5f942eac

I would do what Sarps done and buy a PS3 myself

I know it's not a popular solution, but maybe try fixing and if that doesn't work, just moving on to another console? It would suck for it just to happen again.

I was able to sell my last RROD 360 for $20 because I didn't do any stupid towel tricks or anything like that. Those thermal tricks are just causing even more damage to it, don't bother with them

Wow, if people are just giving them away maybe I should get back into fixing them. For 15 minutes work I could turn a loss of 20 into a gain of like 100+

Pretty sure that's what he was thinking. If I were you though I wouldn't buy any that had the "towel trick" done to them.

Yes, because buying a more expensive console, that doesn't run any of the games you own seems like a good choice.

Besides, the current 360 doesn't have any of these problems.

You can open the disc drive with the console turned off with a paperclip (or similar thin, stiff object). This page should guide you through it: http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/troubleshoot/kb/how-to-manually-eject-a-disc-906935

Or if that doesn't help just search for another guide, but it's definitely possible.

That is a great guide. But, there's actually several different drive manufacturers for the 360 and the MS website only covers one.

May I suggest this site once you get the faceplate off: http://www.llamma.com/xbox360/repair/manual_eject_xbox_360_dvd.htm
