Far from me to stand in the way of a perfectly good rant against GW, but it does come accross as if your wife is confused about something.
If she wants to complain then by all means complain about the cost of Failcast, the lack of quality control of Failcast, the excessive flash or any other valid reason. But the molds on the Harlequins are the exact same ones that where used to cast the models when they where metal, so that really isn't a valid reason to complain...

It's nothing she can really help, and in her mind she's not wrong, she's championing a cause she thinks is valid and trying to get interested in time hobby..... I was wrong- TWO people get it. Apparently it was after looking at the DE Lhaemean and the Death Jester blisters, both of which were single models. I was there making a purchase of my own, and with her being in the planning stages of her army and what not didn't feel the need to hand hold on this bunker trip. She goes "So where is the harlequin box?" and I go, I think they're switching to finecast. She had already seen the other two and drew her own conclusions from there. You are 99% accurate, and I salute you. I don't know that she thinks she's an expert, per se. She has been asking me plenty of questions lately. Even though she wants to model and paint and not play she still didn't want to make the jump to buying an army that was going to eventually sit on the shelf and collect dust. She was planning her purchases based on things she wants to buy/ i want to run and trying to find a balance between those. I've answered more questions about the FoC in the past week than a redshirt answers in a month (this statement is an exaggeration). She got hung up on the harlequin thing tho and once it looked like that was out of the question the whole thing became a no go.

Then maybe she(and by extension, you who apparently planned to post it on Dakka) should have written a better email and made better examples rather than playing a round of "Jump to Conclusion!". She has had to sit through the complaining I've done about finecast costing more and being cheaper to produce. She safely assumes that a finecast kit is going to cost more than a metal one. No, plenty of people understand that Finecast costing more is not reflective of the actual intent behind them swapping from metal to resin. Right now, GW can effectively say that "it's start-up costs, and we'll do price reviews later"(which isn't entirely untrue--even if all they do is raise the prices. They reviewed 'em, felt they were too low! ). Plenty of people also understand that GW's stuff is extortionately expensive. What is being "nitpicked" about is the fact that this email is reflective of the kneejerk attitude that comes every time a company does something its customers do not like. Whether it be AT&T "locking" iPhones to their carrier so you can't swap or EA and Ubisoft introducing a "brand new DRM!" to combat piracy--there is inevitably people complaining without having a clue of what they're talking about.

No. I honestly didn't expect this insane amount of blowback, either. Especially from a post that I don't think was remotely incendiary.

I honestly 100% don't get it.
The reason you dont get it is because you think GW is switching toa higher quality material. Fine cast is NOT a higher quaility material.

Higher quality in what sense?
The material is fine, the casting quality so far has been less than fine--but is getting better.
The detail is a bit better on some models but it is not noticeable on every single model.

Actually GW's prices on resin are about the average for huminoid resin sculpts.

And that is entirely your opinion. I enjoy working with Finecast far more than metal, so I think it's a better quality material. Just because you think something does not make it fact.
As for the OP, I am sad people are still complaining about this. If you don't like it, go seek out the metal models, they're still out there.
As for the metal and resin models being the "same mold", they are not. They may use the same masters to make the molds, but the molds are very different.

I am not getting all the hate here. Someone decided to write a letter because they are unhappy with something. True, some of the information in the letter might be off the mark, but I fail to see how that should result in so much nastiness. Isn't rule 1 or 2 here "be polite?"

I honestly 100% don't get it.
EDIT: And you do know that you can still buy metal harlequins at retail prices on eBay... right?
Higher quality is highly suspect. 50% more costly for problems like bubbles or misformed molds or like my nephew, who bought the finecast orc shaman on a boar. Much to his dismay he is finding the weight of the model -with the boar on two legs - started to bend and wilt. Cool- I enjoy paying 30 bucks for a 20 dollar model in metal that has the durability of a cardboard box in a rain storm...
I would also agree, I will no longer make purchases of anything "Finecast" as I find the quality and durability questionable. Especially so when I think of a 50% markup.
Now I will give you a GW marketing ploy - Model X in finecast for $20 or model X in metal for $30. Let the customer chose. If they like the finer detail and the supposedly more cost efficient finecast go with it but for the old fashioned luddite who likes the durability of metal, then you pay a premium.
Here is hoping that with the next release of eldar that all the aspects will become plastic and all the wracks will become plastic. Here is hoping for plaguebearers in plastic kits instead of "finecast."

I'll make no excuses for finecast wilting in hot temperatures. If you want to buy the oldschool metal ones, I'm sure eBay can hook you up for likely less than 50% more.

I agree Ebay for the next year or two but after that, so sorry. As an example I am kind of intrugued by the new Necrons but I am hesitating due to the HQ figs being in finecast. They look nice to be sure but I don't want to spend 20 to 30 bucks on a "wilter" so I will have to see if an old school necron lord will look okay next to the new models. If not, my choice might be to say too bad, so sad but no Necrons for me.

I must admit I live in a fairly hot environment much of the time, it gets well over 100 here in the summer, but do your models actually wilt when not exposed to direct sunlight? I had a Lelith in my car's trunk for more than a month during the summer and that model seems to have survived.

Nono , see the minis in the GW foam carrier. It wouldnt fit 100% unless its designed like BattleFoam.
So there are odds and ends that easily pokes out.
When that is stacked + hot day, it WILL bend or snap.
