Most researchers aren't in it for the money.

That said, neither are most software engineers.

The fact is, most people aren't particularly motivated by raw cash. The kind of people who are, tend to end up in careers like banker or salesperson where cash is the primary reward.

And that is something people motivated ONLY by money have a hard time comprehending.

There are othe rmotivators such as recognition, family, competition, and security. The trick is knowing which one motivates YOU.

Yeah, for me it's a mixture of job security and a simple interest in chemistry that motivates my majoring in Chemistry.
