The title of the thread, "GW marketing for necrons is fail", made it relatively easy to infer what the purpose of this thread was going to be. I think I derailed it for a bit by throwing in some actual pertinent product release news.

I was a bit frustrated when they decided to stop all the "Incoming" e-mails. That helped plan ahead.

Those that are surprised at this really need to think a little more. Of course there is going to be a bit of a build up.

GW does this with all it's major releases. This is GW new version of the INCOMING e-mails and website hints that games workshop has done over the years.

Think of it the other way if GW just dropped the bomb and posted the pre orders it might miss the non hardcore fans by or be too much of a shock for them (for want of better words).

A little uninspired this time but they are of course keeping A LOT close to their chests with Necrons. And i think thats really where the fail comes seen as we probably know all there is to know by this point. When GW does the big reveal it isn't going to be that much of a stir at all on forum like this.

GW might want to really think about plugging the leaks if they want the online community to take this with any seriousness.

I'm actually glad they stopped the "We're going to release something, but we're not going to show you what it is." emails. Less tidying of my hotmail inbox required

I'm no economics expert, but the sales for necrons would probably be terrible when they were first released and have a sudden spike (my guess, anyway) because everyone would be surprised and wouldn't have been saving up money. Yeah I get that feeling as well but no ammount of blury leaked images makes up for a genuine well thought out marketing strategy IMO.

Sadly I think this is right on the money.

5 years ago when I wasnt as into the hobby as I am now, I wasnt scouring the internet for every last clue on every possible release. Something like this would have been very exciting. I approve.

I get a kick out of these threads. We already know whats coming out because we've seen the leaked articles et al and because they weren't up on the GW website first it must mean that GW marketing failed. Call it what they want, its a grass roots marketing campaign as GW doesn't provide anything other than the image to another site and everyone else hosts the images, discusses them, etc.

Besides, I'm sure tomorrow there will be a thread linked to another YouTube Video confirming the rumor to be true that GW will in fact be releasing Necrons. Then by the end of the week, there will be a post stating "Look they are available to Pre Order!", then later it is "here are all the rules we feel are broken". I think Simba from Disney's "The Lion King" would call it the "Circle of Life".

That is what you hope for but even if it isn't in GW official marketing strategy hand book (avaliable from no good marketing gurus incorperated, trading since close to infinity) they do, no doubt, benefit from the hype generated by leaked images. This of course fuels the speculation that GW real strategy is just to do nothing and let these things leak. It is after all probably cheaper.

Well I refuse to call it a marketing campaign and I equally refuse to believe it's intentional. The leaks over the past few months have been far too random in content and quality to be qualify as a strategy which could subsequently be measured for success.

If they were serious about curbing this problem they would control those who have access to the magazine and then only allow those photographing and making the add access to the pictures and the editor to put them in the magazine. My money would be on an employee and if your group was responsible for the leak, I'm sure they could look into the people and fire the person in charge of the group that leaked the image. Its not hard - just include it in the employee's job responsibilities that this information does not get out and if it does it would mean that they would be terminated. Unless the person doesn't want a job, this stuff wouldn't get leaked.

My opinion is GW is intentionally leaking this so they don't have to pay the costs to host a message board, moderate it, etc. It allows them to create more buzz by "leaking" their rumors as if they put something more official out there the Company could see a decline in the sale of the current products. Thats my $0.02. Take it or leave it.

Seriously, if you invest vast sums of money into creating a product, you would not market it such a random way. Think about the recent leaks

Storm of Magic - Blurry White Dwarf photos
Vampire Counts - Blurry White Dwarf photos
Ogre Kingdoms - High quality images from the army book
Dreadfleet - Nothing
Necrons - Good quality images from White Dwarf, followed by a C&D to the offending website

How on earth could you evaluate the performance of this "strategy" against sales of the products?

But it should have been a month ago... with slowly leaking information from the source...

I know it's not the same company, but Privateer Press does this and has this policy and they are doing pretty darn well for themselves.

Well said! Whether it was aimed at the type of people who frequent this forum or not, releasing it before last week (thanks to BoW) would have made it worthwhile. As things stand, it's a bit sad and we just have to assume it's "decoration."

You can keep your 2 cents. GW didn't leak the pics, that would be giving them too much credit where it isn't due. To implement such a weird policy and then purposefully undermine it and give discount retailers the chance to take pre-orders (to whatever agreement they have) would be madness...wait, it's GW we're talking about, you could be onto something

Looking forward to Saturday. Not because of the pre-orders, but for the endless 'GW haven't shown us anything we didn't know. Fail!!!!' threads. Always a giggle.
