Because, as mentioned in the massive Necron thread(where this is posted, incidentally), they do not do these for us "hardcore" gamers who are chomping at the bit for any leaks.
They do this so that the casual gamers who come into the shops, don't post on these forums, etc can be pointed to the "What's New Today" section and get a feeling of satisfaction when they go "Oh my God, NECRONS ARE COMING BACK!".

I'm not a hardcore gamer, I've seen the leaks, but I still thought 'Holy flying Orc the Necrons are back!' when I saw the video.
Also, it's ambiguous enough that it could be Eldar, which would be interesting given the Necron hipe.

It's a Necron glyph, not an Eldar rune.
Someone posted the Biel-Tan rune as "what it could be", but the Biel-Tan rune has a flare on the arms leading outward that the glyph in the video did not have.

It is marketing.
Think about it, if they had not done that, would this thread exist?
It costs them very little to make a short video like that, and it has generated this thread, and probably many others, telling people about what they have done.
If it is like this on Dakka, it is proably similar on all the other gaming forums.
Almost free marketing to a lot of people.

What you're missing, Raptors, is that here and on these other dedicated gaming forums like Dakka--it's not "OMG NECRONS ARE COMING!" it's "Wow, GW's so dumb. Gawd, we know Necrons are coming!".
But on the smaller, local gaming group sites where people don't trawl through rumormonger reports, seek out leaks, etc--the video gets posted with "Oh my gosh, there's a Necron glyph! Did you guys see that?! NECRONS ARE COMING BACK!".
I can attest to that, as someone literally posted that in my local gaming group's forum.

I just assumed pre-orders would go up on the GW website today and the info would be officially out.
Hi, there! The current SOP for the past few months is for all Advance Orders to go up on Fridays just after midnight GMT (7 PM Eastern Time US), technically first thing Saturday morning in the UK. The release date is usually exactly one week later (Dreadfleet excepted it had a 2 week lead time, all the others have been one week lead time since June). This is the post May 28, 2011 GW world. GW marketing for necrons is fail
It's such a failure that a topic thread was immediately and excitedly started about it here on a major forum and on other major blogs and forums as well such as BoLS. Strange definition of failure. Oh, the forums (cue eye rolling and sigh).

I agree, it may not be big news to us, but it might be to some people.
Someone who isn't a member of a forum and just browses every so often would be more likely to notice with a lot of discussion going on. People who don't read rumours, or simpily don't belive them, get told about it.
Making a video will get many more people talking about it, as we are doing now, than simpily saying: 'Oh, by the way, we are going to release necrons next week'.
I am by no means a marketing expert or anything, these are just my opinions.

You know I sure would like to see official pictures of necrons on the GW site. To bad I have to wait another week even though the leaked pictures have been up for awhile now.
I'd also like to know if Chaos Legions is real or not, but I guess we won't know until 2 weeks before it comes out ... *YAWN*

Indeed. The video has amped the local group's excitement level to 11.
What's more is that by starting the week with a video, they can slowly keep building the excitement. Maybe tomorrow they preview a Necron Lord, or something like that. Who knows?

I think thats the failure of GW's marketing... anyone who actually has that reaction isn't a casual gamer. They're A) children with few other priorities in life... B) a gamer who's never had the money to become "hardcore" and thus sell their sou but would otherwise bel... or C) a hardcore gamer who's had their head buried in the sand... The casual gamer is one who hears "Necrons next" and goes "they'll be fun to play against" and never considers them because they have enough and their interest are more diverse so as to keep them from being lured into buying another army by such a petty and whimsical ploy.
So that 1-2% of casual gamers go "Wow" and the 90% of the devotee who make up 45% of gamers grumble... while the remaining casual players either grumble or shrug out disinterest for the whole issue.

Yeah, sure, the marketing is a failure and GW will be out of business in months because no one is excited about their new products or is willing to buy them. That's why there are dozens of pages of discussion about Necrons on this form alone, because GW marketing = failure. What planet do those kinds of comments come from? Anyway, love it, hate it or acting factually challenged about it, let's move on to actual news. Here's NECRON PRODUCT INFO from THE WAR STORE: http://www.thewarstore.com/ Prices are the US GW List Prices and The War Store's discounted prices. I think you're putting words in our mouths. Kaluwen was speaking from the perspective that GW expects us to have extreme "wow" moments in their stores that perpetuate seemingly impulsive purchasing targeted at casual gamers. I just think its a disconnect, because by virtue of being "casual" those players tend not to get overly excited in that way. Those that do have that impulsive imperitive are rarely casual gamers. I'd actually go out on a limb and say most of the people who comes on to Dakka and posts are generally outside the scope of GW's target marketing effort. The fact we feel the necessity to discuss it is why we should be better targeted while those who don't care enough to be fanatical or obsessive will never garner the result GW wants; its also the reason GW feels no need to target us. They believe they have our attention in a way that is more than just a passing curiosity.
It is factual that in the years since GW's instituted its rumor control tight lipped policy, its sales volume has declined with revenue propped up and held stable reltaive to inflation only by its greater price tags. It is statistically a failure because its either contributed to a plataeu or failed to generate sales growth. GW's marketing its either a cause, part of a larger trend, or misread of its target demographic.

How large a part of the community? GW's target demographic is 12-27 year old males in middle to upper class. Maybe if you add up all the other demographics in the minority you might break even with that; though I'm doubtful. The issue is that GW's marketing really ignores the fact that the demographic they've vocally targeted uses the internet. GW to many of this generation of gamers still has its head in la-la-land shangrila when it comes to that fact. At my FLGS, most of the gamers find out directly from forums and those that don't, find out from people who do. No one, I mean absolutely no one in my gaming store waits for GW's marketing.

Oh, you mean they dont go around forums or look on youtube. They just go on youtube to look at videos they found on forums. Is this reveal on tv? radio? Theatres? No?
Then this is it's infection vector whether the people are hardcore or not.
