Is my new Tyranid fandex too strong?
It's too OP. They will beat the grey knights to a pulp.
They're much improved and will make for a good fight.
Can't really tell yet/not sure.
Changes aren't too bad....but they still lose.
Not in the least. Grey Knights will still woop their arses.

I know there are deficiencies in the codex, but did you write the codex to fix them or to solve the problem of an "underpowered" and underperforming army? Plus, if tournaments are in your your future, wouldn't writing a fandex become more of a burden, as now you have two codices for one army?

Also, since the Grey Knights can be rather shooty, did you really show that you fixed anything by using a table with absolutely no cover or LOS blockages whatsoever? Especially since that tends to be the #2 complaint of 5th edition Tyranid players is their vulnerability vs Marine shooting?

Dunno about jy2, but I know I keep it up because I find it kind of fun to just think about how I would try to change things. Plus seeing people going out and using it is a joy in and of itself. And who knows, maybe GW will give me a job haha

I don't think anyone contributed with the intention that this fandex could be used at any serious tournament.

Even if they gave me a job, I probably wouldn't be able to take it. Got my own business already, which I enjoy a lot more than working for someone else.

But I wouldn't mind if they use some of my ideas in their future works. It'll be kinda cool actually.

It is sad that even a modified fandex Tyranid list still can't beat a freaking Grey knights list though, just adds to the whole "grey knights are too powerful" story.

Actually, it's not too bad. My nids did give them a run for their money, which is all I really wanted. If my nids were able to beat them easily, then the fandex would've probably been too OP. Just to be able to challenge the newer armies and make them sweat is what I wanted to achieve...an improved codex but not an over-powered one.

And actually, I think I lost more due to my list design than anything else. Building a 2.5K army with just 2 troop choices and no mobility means that I may have to table my opponent in an objectives-based game in order to win.

Thanks. Glad you guys enjoyed it.

Andilus Greatsword wrote: Well not necessarily, it wasn't a very balanced list - no real mobility or redundancy. It was mostly just to test out if Pyrovores and Carnifexes don't suck anymore, and in my opinion they have been much-improved over their current incarnations. Also, Hive Will is a great addition to the Tyranid psychic arsenal.

Right. Just the addition of Hive Will is huge. That means we can now face the grey knights without fear. It also resurrects the Tyranid Warriors, a unit that is being used less and less with each new codex coming out.

Another power/special rule that's going to be huge is the tervigon's Psychic Beacon. You'll probably see that as a staple in tyranid armies from people using the fandex and tervigons.

I did it because I'm a fan and it was actually a fun project to do. Some people write books. Some people write journals. Other people watch TV or play video games. Me? I enjoy letting out my creative juices out once in a while by informally publishing my ideas onto the public (even if it's only the internet). Whether people like it or not, use it or not or even look at it, I can't really say. But it would be really cool if even 1 in 1000 find it useful and/or even fun to use. Basically, I did it because I love and enjoy the hobby. Whether or not it would or could be used in a tournament (which I seriously doubt) is not really a concern to me.

One of my philosophies is that a properly designed army is able to compete no matter what the terrain. So whether in sparse terrain or a city-fight-type environment, nids should be able to compete. Terrain is not as big a factor, or at least it shouldn't be, to a properly designed army. And if it is, then you need to be able to compensate. For example, DE transports are really fragile so how do you compensate on a table with a lack of terrain? Flickerfields, night-shields, the ability to go flat-out or just coming in from reserves are some of the tools you have. Likewise, nids have screening gaunts, high toughness, lots of wounds, FNP, venomthropes, bonuses to an all-reserves army and powers such as Psychic Beacon to let them survive many alpha strikes. Now this may not appear obvious to the newer tyranid players, but with a little more experience, you'll start to get a feeling for tyranid synergy and survivability.

Ack, don't pay GW's stratospheric prices! Any fabric store is gonna have the same green color (slightly different texture) for less than $3 a yard ... more than 4' wide too. I have desert tan, black and the golf course green, all for under $10. That GW slick-ish grass mat is good, but for one-tenth the price, buy felt.

Good advice for the cash-strapped gamer!

Guys correct me if I am wrong here but:

With the new codex (courtesy of Matt Ward, may he never write another Grey Knight codex again) an activated force weapon has ALL of its wounds cause instant death (unlike the old codex which was 1 model only) pg 54, box.

That is only if the unit has the Brotherhood of Psykers special rule. The dreadknight doesn't.
