Because they've also made stuff after Starcraft. The modern Tyranid designs borrow a lot more from Starcraft than from Aliens, as the old ones did.

On moon miranda.

With Andy Chambers having been Creative Director for most of SCII's development, it'd be unlikely if there wasn't any crossover, but at the same time, it's different enough to not carry weight as a copy.

However, I vastly prefer 40k (though of a slightly older, 90's-early 00's vintage) to Starcraft's background.

The correct pronunciation is Imperial Guard and Stormtroopers, "Astra Militarum" and "Tempestus Scions" are something you'll find at Hogwarts.

Everyone else, including Blizzard employees when talking off the record at events like Blizzcon, say that Blizzard approached GW with a completed game hoping for a licensing deal like what was currently in existence with Mindscape and SSI.

GW told them to change their crap or face a lawsuit, under pressure from Mindscape/SSI which was one of the bigger gaming companies doing turnbased/realtime strategy games at the time.

This is what I've heard ever since my early days in gaming. It seems to make the most sence.

"Hey, GW, we just made this kick-ass game for you!"

"Fools! Our fanboys will never except these dome-headed thugs as Space Marines! And why don't these Eldar have mouths? Forget it! Here's a lawsuit! Now get out!"

Also, I had no idea good ol' Andy was working on SC2. I'll have to inform my SC buddy of this info... To witch he'll respond "Who the hell is that?"

Why isn't Gw being sued by Tolkein/Bungie/Herbert and the countless other things they were 'inspired' by?

Amen. This gets rehashed all the time, and it gets old. I only opened the thread to see/add to the flame war. It's 3am, I'm feeling insomnia, and hope I will be forgiven when I wake up for having been a tool tonight.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I believe there was a legal thing, where Blizzard ended up paying a sum to GW, though I am not sure.

Actually if one changes something up enough and does not use any of the trademarked names, one can basically "copy" another's idea.
Take Bakughan and Pokemon for example: Instead of the pokemon live in the balls, the pokemon are the balls!

No.

I think you're reversing what he's saying.

He's asking if starcraft (which he acknowledges came after 40k) copied 40k.

Short answer - yes... sort of.

Long answer - this stems back to "Humans and Orcs" from blizzard and how it copied fantasy (I believe it was actually supposed to be a Warhammer game that GW pulled out at the end).

Yep, and regretted it later, obviously. Heard the story from some of the bigwigs down at GW HQ one day.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Again, I think something is lost in translation.

Every time I've heard it, it's never been anything about GW actually trying to license Blizzard. Blizzard was a virtual no-name company before Warcraft: Humans and Orcs, whilst GW had licenses with the big companies.

Now, if I had to guess they were meaning more that they regretted not having dropped Mindscape/SSI in favor of Blizzard.

Nope. Most of the archetypes in both 40k and Starcraft are fairly common in general science fiction.

What are you talking about!? Mysterious aliens, bug-like swarms, and big guys in power armor are totally unique to 40k! I don't think space travel even existed before Warhams!

Either way, the Shai-Hulud could always just eat all the zerg, which would make SC bland, which would leave 40k uncontested in this matter.

Okay, here's the deal. GW came before Blizzard, but both franchises often take stuff from each other.

If GW was there before blizzard, then how could they have taken anything from Blizzard?

Because when new codexes are reseased there may be some new weapons/characters that are a little bit like starcraft guys

Meh. They are sorta general science-fiction-y.

bio-engineered soldiers in feth-huge armour with big guns? Unique to 40k for SURE.

LOTR in space, really. In a good way.

I was saying that 40k's marines aren't unique.

EDIT: Kinda funny that Tyranids after Starcraft looked -alot- like starcraft zerg.

Tell me about it. I still remember opening a copy of White Dwarf with the "new" Tyranids (the ones that replaced the Tyranid Attack!/Advanced Space Crusade Tyranid models) and thinking, "Hey, that's a Hydralisk!"
