They're the same Prime Minister, as far as I'm concerned. They certainly both had that autocratic streak running through them.

Brown or Blair? Depends what you consider to be the greater evil: Cack-handed ineptitude or Warmongering through deceit.

Both were pretty much terrible.

Yeah Albatross, she did do all that, but then you have some idiot sing "Margeret Thatcher milk snatcher" and people start crying. Bloody ridiculous, but I don't think any country likes taking it's medicine, it just takes a long time for it to be appreciated.

And on Ben Elton, the guy is a twonk. He may have written some good TV, but he's still a twonk.

Haha. As long as you don't try the old "yawn slide your hand onto the bosom" trick.

We are arming Syrian rebels who support ISIS, who is fighting Iran, who is fighting Iraq who we also support against ISIS, while fighting Kurds who we support while they are fighting Syrian rebels.

That's the British PM who oversaw the Falkland war right?

Sorry that's all I know about her...British Politics wasn't a thing I had to study in High school, we have enough problems with our own politics...

Did you study American politics? Between her and Reagan they pretty much revived the Anglo-Saxon financial markets.

That would all depend on what kind of cinema Matty was going to.

I will probably go and watch this with either the wife and/or the father in law. Growing up through her Leadership I cannot say I missed not having milk, wasnt really bothered by it to be honest, always lots of that stuff in the fridge when I got home.

Well, speaking as someone who does know a lot about British politics and who grew up in the 1980s... Maggie was a complete and utter cow!

And yes, I am of a left-wing leaning.
Where to start? Hm... Poll tax, beating up miners, using the security services to spy on trade unions, destroying our manufacturing industry, selling out to the European Union, neglecting the defense of the Falklands (which encouraged Argentina to invade) letting the yuppies run loose etc etc.

Matty, I'm surprised you are a Thatcher fan when you consider former members of your old regiment who we're wounded in the falklands, were chucked on the scrapheap, and hidden away from view during the St Pauls service. Now, you could say this of every British government, but It struck me as particualry cruel at the time.

Our manufacturing industry was pretty much shot to bits, through years of rampant union corruption and cak handedness - I defy any one to pull an outmoded outdated industry into the 20th century with workers who wanted to just make do and go home on full pay.
Miners had to be dealt with with, yeah I have no real sympathy for them. As I understand it most of our mines were rnning at losses wheich were unsustainable, again, the unions effectively hamstrung any kind of revamp. Blaming 'the man' for just enough effort.
Selling out to the European Union?
Yuppies running wild? I think many average jo investors were happy that they did so. If only our British Leyland line workers had the same get up and go....

The only really negative thing that can be said about the Chairman is that Blair and his cronies wanted to emulate her..by being even greedier but buying love by bankrupting the nation.

Thatcher initiated a good range of reforms that were necessary and led directly to a turn around in the British economy, particularly in breaking down the power of the unions. Internationally, she ought to be remembered for her monetary policy, where she really did lead the way in bringing inflation under control, and set the model for how the whole world now operates.

That said, the way she went about her reforms were particularly ruthless, and her social policies would make a modern tory blush. Take that however you want.

Most of the expansion in British financial markets happened under Blair, under the incredibly generous terms he offered the sector. She certainly deserves credit for reviving industry, but not finance.

The US never had a flagging financial sector. No matter how poorly the rest of the country might have been travelling in the late 70s and early 80s, you just don't lose the financial networks centred around New York and Chicago.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

And in America today, Reagan wouldn't survive a Republican Primary. Being as Liberal as he was and all....

Hmmm, I know someone who would do all sorts of naughty things to the Queen, and I now know someone who'd do all sorts of naughty things to Madge.

What is it with me and finding people who would absolutely destroy the older members of our country?

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

Shame she also had to get so friendly with vermin like Pinochet. But then Blair did the same with Gadaffi, and he had a hand in selling the IRA explosives, dropping a plane in Scotland and murdering British police in the street. Blair also acquiesced to the IRA by setting free a load of murderers from British prisons to help along the peace process. Yes, things are better than they were in Northern Ireland, and some ex-terrorists even have seats in their government, but the release of those killers in prison sticks in the craw of many all the same.

I don't think Brown was a great PM, he didn't have the charisma that Blair had and that exposed him to a lot more criticism. Blair was very slimy IMO.
