It's why the Raptors are one of my favourite Chapters. Second Founding Successor, pretty much everything there is to like about the Raven Guard, but in a different paint scheme I like

Do these steps in order without reading on to the next step before completing the previous.

1) Find a coin

2) Assign DA to heads and RG to tails

3) Flip said coin.

4) While it was in the air, what did you hope it would come up as?

5) Choose that army regardless of the result of the coin flip

i agree with the post earlier, the robes are the only cool/unique thing about them!

And you are the ultimate BA fanboy... it's between DA and RG, no one talks BA here.

I personally like both, though I do prefer DA (I'm collecting them).
The only thing that annoys me about DA is the Deathwing. It's so overrated, and I hate painting bone anyway.

I'd say go for whichever you feel you would enjoy more depending on which aspect of 40k you like the most. Fluff, paint scheme, tactics, codex?

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

Raven Guard during the early heresy are awesome. They're also great during 'modern' 40k (outstealthing Telion in The Chapters Due, an Ultramarines book!)

However, during the latter part of the heresy when he goes mad, it's well, rather rubbish and creates frankensteins Ravens.

Dark Angels on the other hand, I've always loved, even their books heresy, which admittedly, weren't tremendously well written, still has loads of depth and mystery to them.

While the Templars are the 'crusading knights,' continuing the Great Crusade 10000 years later, whereas the Dark Angels are more the 'repentant knights' - it's not just the cover up, that's just an aspect of their 'shame' - The Dark Angels are trying to basically, atone for, what they see of it as, their sins. And, that's just fascinating.

It's been mentioned in a couple official or at least semi-official sources that the RG are known to use sound-dampened power armor.

Basically they sorta dorked around during the Heresy trying to compete for 'least helpful Legion' ended up mostly killing themselves as some sort of odd cover up operation they refused to discuss how they had traitors (because, y'know, no other legion had trouble with that). And now they just run around trying to hide that they aren't totally loyal, and the current fluff even has them doing that to the point they're failing at missions which sort of reinforces their failure in loyalty to the Emperor and Imperium and I just don't 'get' it or why it's cool. They seem like lost children to me - I don't find that enticing as a backstory.

Halp?

So what did the Ultramarines do? At least the Dark Angels were on their way with the Space Wolves back to Terra. The DA and SW were sent out by Horous from his cunningness to not even be close to Terra. So no the DA did not "dork" around.

Not sure who the Raven Guard are. I only collect and play Dark Angels so voted for them.

The DA, SW, and UM were sent away by Horus because he was afraid of them, that has to count for something

So what did the Ultramarines do?

Now you;re asking if I like Ultramarines - no, I find them shoehorned (poorly) into the fluff. Fists over the Smurfs any day. I probably do like DA better than Ultramarines, but that's just because I think Guilliman is possibly the most obnoxious primarch ever. The rest of the chapter...meh...I find most of their look and paint scheme awesome.

Thats a fact, he deliberately made them fight in other places so they couldn't fight him.

I thought it had to do with the Ultramarines being such a large legion, and thus their presence would bring a distinct numerical advantage for the Loyalist side. I dont think Horus was gakking his terminator pants, I think he was just being strategic about it.

Partly, but he also knew that if even just Guilliman was on Terra, he would be at a distinct tactical disadvantage

It's pretty awesome, yes, and one of the many reasons why the Raven Guard are among my favorite chapters, but I'm not entirely sure if it's really fitting with Space Marine ideology. All other Space Marines are fanatical, fearless, bombastic super-soldiers who walk into storms of lasfire because they can, while the Raven Guard are, really, about as close to the Reasonable Marines as you're going to get in official GW publications. They act far more like a rational, modern-day military force than anybody else.

That's cool and all, until you realize that he tried the same thing with Sanguinius and it DIDN'T work. Blood Angels were the only legion to fight through their trap and make it to Terra.

OT: Raven Guard are absolutely awesome, I absolutely love their fluff and their style of fighting. Dark Angels on the other hand, I have to say are the only loyal legion that I truly dislike. They are downright hostile to any and all Imperium forces and citizens whenever a Fallen may be nearby, so they are doing a piss poor job of 'atoning' for their past sins IMO. I realize that the novel doesn't exactly portray them fairly due to the perspective, but one of the Space Wolves omnibuses depict them first firing on the Space Wolves with no provocation or warning, then waging open war on the entire loyal populace because there is ONE member of the Fallen on the planet. Yeah, lot of good that did donkey-caves, great way of atoning.

EDIT: Donkey-caves At least it's funny censorship.
