I think the OP might be comparing his painting to some of the amazing stuff people post here. If you only looked at stuff like what Winterdyne and others post here, you would think your very passable painting was crappy too. I know I do.

They aren't terrible, they are a lot better than my work. I will have to post some of my orks up soon so you can take a look at them...

Based on the title of the post I was expecting to see something really horrible here. Let me tell you that what you have done is better than alot of the Ebay auctions I see listed as "Pro Painted" (dont get me started on that rant). All I can tell you is that painting is the Art of the hobby that we all love so much. The "hobby" composed of collecting/converting, painting and playing. No one of the "almost masterclass" painters as you put it, got that way overnight. It took practice. I know there is a HUGE difference between models I painted back in the 80's when I first started and the models I produce now. Painting takes practice. It can be frustrating at times, but once you develop some of your own techniques, you will find that painting is faster. You will see things on a new model and go "oh yeah that technique i used before on XXXX model will work good on this guy I think, maybe just a different color". Keep with it. You have a solid foundation to work off of. Just remember dont cake paint on to save time, thinner multiple layers will produce a better product than one coat of really thick paint.

Your painting is solid. You won't be winning any Golden Daemons with it, but it's far better than you let on. I am not impressed with your Emperor's Champion though. Yes, his wargear is more or less correct. His paintjob is solid. My problem is that he just isn't commanding enough to suggest an Emperor's Champion. His pose and ornamentation make him a sergeant at the very most to me. Regardless, keep painting! You'll only get better the more you paint.

As I have always stated many of times, painting is subjective by nature. I like his stuff. It shows potential. Keep up the good work.

Adam's Motto: Paint, Create, Play, but above all, have fun. -and for something silly below-

"We are the Ultramodrines, And We Shall Fear No Trolls. bear this USR with pride".

Also, how does one apply to be a member of the Ultramodrines? Are harsh trials involved, ones that would test my faith as a wargamer and resolve as a geek?

You must recite every rule of Dakka Dakka. BACKWARDS.

You should be very proud as those are quality table top pieces there. I hope this thread helps motivate others. I find it refreshing seeing a pianted army even if it is low quality as some times quantity has a quality of its own.

Thanks for your supports & criticisms. Previously I subbed the painting of all of my models to others, making the armies look like mercenaries warbands instead of a thematic army(ies). Now I'm learning to paint my own models, but the title speaks for itself..for the love of Horus, painting really stretch my patience to the limit.

Anyhow, here are a couple of pics of the latest model I've finished painting. Took me more than an hour (& several cups of black coffee) at the bistro doing just this 1 model.

And to give you guys a clearer picture of the kind of paintings I have to compete with at the local tournament, here are some examples (courtesy of my own younger brother);

@Murenius: The last 3 pics are the handiwork oh my younger brother. The red Lightning Claws-Terminator is mine. I just want to show the difference in painting skills between the 2 of us. As the elder brother (& the one who introduced & tutored him to the game) he really put me to shame...

Oh well, whatever..

...I hate painting...
