That's the fluff. IF GW were to rule that the special ability worked with sweep attacks, that would be a good way to picture it. You can't make a ruling based on fluff, though, as fluff can easily be used to rationalize any ruling, one way or another.

Ghaz wrote:And you haven't explained how a power weapon that says it works on models wounded in close combat when you're not in close combat.

This is not an unreasonable point. I would say the sense in which they are not directly comparable is that if we ignore the ability to deny armor saves the power weapon is meaningless. Whereas if we ignore the ability to do the "boom", the empathic obliterator is still doing something. Beyond that, the additional steps required to activate the "boom" seem at least to imply that the intent is for it only to go off when locked in close combat. I suspect it is worth a FAQ, as it's not 100% obvious, by any means.

I agree it's not obvious and I could see an FAQ going either way.

You would ignore armor saves and get other bonuses (+2 s +1d6 armor for a warscythe) for Sweep Attack.

Now kindly stop changing the subject and support your claims that a hyperphase sword would ignore armour saves when the rules say that it would only do so against wounds caused in close combat.

Good point, I think it makes sense to include "...any Strength bonuses and special abilities from his close combat weapon" One of these bonuses include ignoring armor saves. I am fine with giving the Empathic Obliterator bonus to him. What I am not fine with is classifying that unit as being in CC with Trazyn. Would you care to say why this should be the case, feel free to use my premise that you should benefit from the bonuses (like ignoring armor) and whether the EO rule is too specific to fit into this context (IMO it is)

Has there been any clarifying on this rule, because I just read it and came up with the combo of Trazyn on the command barge, but thought it was too powerful. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated. Clarifications do not include repeat of above, but NEW information that could clarify. Thx!
