You would think they would have put his armor in a status field or in the palace museum or something. You know... for when he comes back. He'll need it!

Apparently it was pretty burnt and wrecked.

The bit about the Crux is a reference to an old Catholic belief that every church altar has a piece of the true cross.

It's not true, I've had priests tell me it's not true, but everyone still believes it.

That's true. It got pretty mangled. Which leads me to another gripe: his arm was pulled from his body by Horus... yet in some illustrations his mangled body is shown with both arms. Grrr. They gotta get their fluff/art straight.

I didn't know that about the Crux/Catholic/Cross bit. Thanks for sharing.

Think they swapped Ollanius for an IF Terminator Captain first of all, who distracted Horus by firing at him (pathetic!), then changed it to a Custodes, because they're boring as hell compared to a solitary Guardsman standing up, dusting off his fatigues and letting the Marines/Custodes know that he's got this one, so they can sit back and relax, then planting himself square in front of a Primarch who could, and did, tear him apart without a moments thought or effort.

Likely they did it so it would make more "Sense" from a fluff standpoint, but I still say humbug...give the boy his moment in glory....

I personally think it makes less sense with an augmented super human doing it. That it was an ordinary human who protected his Emperor, delaying Horus by vital seconds to give the Emperor the time he needed to strike the renegade Primarch down is awesome. It's a metaphor to me; Humanity, represented in Ollanius Pius, protecting the Emperor in his hour of need when he would have done the same for them.

At least it makes Horus more impressive to flay a superhuman with his mind. Though I prefer the certain death you-shall-not-pass aspect.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

More like His mind. He can unleash massive warp storms anywhere in the galaxy (Storm of the Emperor's Wrath) and stop time while holding audiences (Jaq Draco). And Living Saints probably channel the Emperor's power, like daemons do for the Chaos Powers and the Avatar for the Eldar war-god.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

The storm of the emperor's wrath is claimed to be him, IIRC, not proven to be (name aside)

I think Sebastian Thor just assumed it was Emperor sent, because it happened to the other side, rather than to his forces Powerful,. lingering warp storms aren't exactly unknown in the galaxy, after all, and they are not all of Imperial manufacture

Stopping time is a neat trick though

Fluff doesn't exactly contradict the Storm of the Emperor's Wrath being unleashed by the Emperor though, so we can assume that causing warp storms is part of His power. Fluff does imply that Mankind's collective belief in the Emperor's divinity has increased the Emperor's might.

Nor does it confirm it, so no we cannot assume it was part of his power.

Prove it was him. Otherwise it was just co-incidence. Thor took it as a sign that it was, is all, unless you have something a tad more concrete?

The Emperor may be stronger due to human belief. I'll not dispute the possibility, as other deities work the same way.

It doesn't prove that the warpstorm was anything more than a fluke, that got claimed as being Big E's work

Warpstorms pop up all the time. A warpstorm that nailed the baddies, then vanished and reappeared on the next nearest concentration of baddies, over and over again.. that i'd be more likely to believe as being deliberate.

Good point. Codex: Sisters of Battle 2nd Edition only states that it was taken as a sign of the Emperor's will since it destroyed Vandire's forces. Still, IMO , the storm was caused by the Emperor since it seems to be too great a coincidence that it destroyed Vandire's forces just by random (although I'm not throwing the possibility aside).

Re the Vandire-wiping storm:

The Spanish Armada was scattered by a truly vicious storm, IIRC, losing about a third of its ships. It was taken as a sign from God at the time.

Was it? Probably not. Might have been, i suppose, but probably not.

If you want to believe it was Him, then feel free. I'm more inclined towards it being spacey-wasey, timey-wimey random chance, especially since it's STILL there, and serving no useful purpose, presumably draining Big E of power to maintain it (unless there's something we don't know lurking in the region that's cut off.... (cue outer limits music..)

Will we ever find out..? Probably not, but I can have fun imagining the unbelievably uber threat that Big E is still containing, if it's true...

Bit of a waste of power if so, given the hole the IOM is in..

I like the idea of a prison myself, holding in something uber, if it has to be His. I still think it's just a coincidence

Hate it when they tamper with great fluff.

They retconned him as a Marine? Why the feth for?

IIRC they took the awsome guardsman, replaced him with a marine, then a termy, and as it stands atm it is a custode, i think but im not 100% certain. and the feth for is because they are Games workshop ... nuff said

I think they decided that it was unlikely that a simple guardsman would have survived the fight throught the Vengeful Spirit, so he got retconned. Still, it isn't such a good story.

Yeah, the idea of a normal, unaugmented and truly human character standing up to the the greatest terrors of the galaxy, through only sheer force of will and courage for even the smallest chance to save something that he holds dear to him is probably the greatest imagery and thematic element that Games Workshop has ever made.

So of course they had to ruin it.

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away...

IIRC, in the 40K compendium, they say imperial historians are not sure whether this "saint" was a custodes, a guardsman or an IF marine.

But in the most recent publications about this event, the meat-shield dude is a custodes.

"How many more worlds do we sacrifice? How many more millions or billions do we betray before we turn and fight?" - attributed to Captain Leoten Semper of Battlefleet Gothic - Gothic War, the evacuation of Belatis.

If commanding a Titan is a measure of true power, then commanding a warship is like having one foot on the Golden Throne - Navy saying.

Lexicanum still lists Ollanius Pius as a guardsman. So if anyone could tell me where else i could check I would try my best

Also, I always pictured the big E with a rubber ducky. I don't know why
