Just read up on it, apparently he was clean shaven and wearing brand new sneakers ( why that was important I'll never know...) Was arrested behind a mall, unarmed, and didn't resist...what a pussy. Must have predated tasers and mace.

My gripe with OP's article, is it does not pass comment on whether or not said islamists were harassed. If you want to call the kids over at columbine terrorists; sure, but an investigation showed that those shooters reached the breaking point and took their anger out with daddy's guns.

I am not claiming to know anything about OP's article, I just refuse to pass judgement on this without all the information there. It's easy to call someone who says "give to the poor, help those in need" a left-wing dirty damn hippie loving communist... In reality he's just a middle-class family man with strong christian values.

That said, if someone fires on their own nations' military base? or on their own nations' military personnel? And does this knowingly and willingly? The response depends on two things. A.) the country is a corrupt military dictatorship, in which case the actions of the individual are justified, or B.) the person has just viably made themself a target of the military, all actions are justified. (But require probing, as to what instigated the individual's action)

and that's exactly my gripe. You have people who would probably be raving angry against "them heathen muslims", when the person trying to help with the stress is a muslim, and then probably gets crapped on for being one. I remember highschool and junior high, so while it would be nice to think that adults act with rationality, thought and compassion, I have already been disappointed too many times by adults exhibiting immature childish behavior to give another adult human being the benefit of the doubt.

You'd be greatly confused. The top three Islamic populations are Indonesia, Pakistan, and India ranging from 202M to 160M. You may be remembering that the US has the third largest POPULATION, but only about 1.8-2.6M Muslims (CIAWFB v Pew).
I wouldn't find it hard at all to find a Arab Muslim at major in the US Army. His professional degree guarantees him Captain and 99% of officer make Major before retiring.

The US has a miniscule population of Muslims, both as a number and a percentage relatively to many other countries. Not sure where you heard that claim.

There are numerous Muslims in the armed forces and the fort hood guy probably joined the military long before the current conflict (likely in the mid-90's). My dad's battalion was assigned an Imam as a spiritual adviser when they deployed to Iraq in 2006.

I wouldn't be shocked if the US had the 3rd largest growing Muslim population. That would not shock me at all (though I of course do not know). Maybe that's what you heard? A lot of our immigrants who aren't from Latin America are coming to us these days from the Mid-East and Southeast Asia.

Actually in the USA there are roughly 2.45 Million Muslims, while the UK has a population of 1.65 Million.

You really don't have that many... which seems odd.

Europe = 38,112,000

Americas = 4,596,000

Quite a population disparity.

That's possible. In fact, that rings a bell. Our teacher was doing a lesson on Islam (along with several other religions), and he mentioned some statistic to the effect of "United states, third". Can't recall, but he could always have been wrong.

My english teacher is a fascinating man. He was raised in california to a Marine father, and he went to high school in Kuwait in the late eighties. He speaks fluent Arabic, and he left about 6 months before the gulf war, at which point he was in Ireland. His father stayed back in Kuwait and ended up as an Iraqi hostage, and was later released. He's a cool guy.

It's actually sort of funny, I was thinking the same thing when I read that. When I moved out of NY, I was amazed to find that Jews elsewhere are a rare creature, near mythological in nature. I haven't seen a single Hasidic the entire time I've lived out here.

The OP's article leaves out plenty of information, although it is not completely without merit. I can see how many people can jump at calling him a terrorist, his trial is in March by the way. I guess when he is tried we will see, his charges as of right now do not include terrorism as far as I know.

Link to a Fox news article and a snippet from it.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/11/08/lieberman-announces-investigation-fort-hood-shooting/
The alleged gunman, a Palestinian-American and an Army psychiatrist, reportedly shouted "Allahu akbar! -- Arabic for "God is great!" when he opened fire. He was seriously wounded by police and is being treated in a military hospital.
The military has said he was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan, and family members suggested he was trying to avoid serving overseas.

That doesn't add up to the prelude to a terrorist attack, said Carl Tobias, a professor of law at University of Richmond who analyzes terrorist investigations across the country.
"Terrorist attacks are undertaken by people who typically ... have some agenda they want to forward politically, and from what I see in the news, this is just a person acting individually because he doesn't want to deploy overseas," he said. "So I just don't see that angle."

And another source that talks about him not wanting to deploy, it is a more touchy feely article.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/nov/06/nidal-malik-hasan-fort-hood-shooting1

It looks like he lacked the political motivation to be considered a terrorist.

Edit
I guess except for this report...
http://tpmmuckraker.talkingpointsmemo.com/2011/02/lieberman_collins_report_fort_hood_shooting_could.php

Just another read on the subject.
http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/h/nidal_malik_hasan/index.html
The report was prepared by the offices of Senators Joseph I. Lieberman and Susan Collins, who said they were rebuffed numerous times by law enforcement and other government agencies in their attempt to investigate the attack. Mr. Lieberman, a Connecticut independent, is chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, and Ms. Collins, of Maine, is the ranking Republican.

The conclusions of the report echoed a Pentagon review released in 2010 that detailed a systemic breakdown within the military that permitted Major Hasan to advance through the ranks despite concerns that he embraced violent Islamic extremism

Ahhh America. This is just OP. Americans need to get over this fact of "Today's Terrorism" there is not much of it in the actual U.S of A. Sure there is some in the Middle East, but not as much as there was in 1998-2006. But most of this bull crap about terrorism in the states is just egged on by the friggen conservative government because they hate anyone that is not white, or some sort of shade of white.

Well, the truth as you interpret it.

If people want to argue about which country has the largest muslim population, or which muslim population is growing the fastest, it's quite clever to look up the facts on the topic.

For example, it's hard to understand how a muslim population of 1.8 or 2.4 million (the USA) is going to grow faster than a population of 202 million (Indonesia).

However, checking the WHO stats on the topic shows that in fact, the US muslim population is growing at a rate of more than 250% per year!

If the Muslim population grew by 250% a year and there were 1.8M here in 2001 why are there not 6.8B here...
I tried to find the WHO report and could not, maybe it was for a ten year period from say 1990 to 2000

I just made it up. My view on internet arguments is that:

A. A lot of people just pull stuff out of their arse.
B. Hardly anyone checks references (well done for doing so BTW!)
C. Facts are often useless because most people decide things on emotional/ideological grounds.
D. Sometimes you can make people question their views by presenting something illogical or ridiculous in a serious way, as it can make people think about it for themselves.
