In response to the OP, TF2 is a great F2P game. I've had it for a few months now and have logged at least 100 hours, it never gets old with all the user generated content.
Give it a try, and if you see shrewsrule11 around make sure to say hi!

Since there's confusion, the item system works like this
you can "find" a maximium of 10 items per week
the chance you will find an item every minute is based on when you last found an item, so if you dont play for a day or two you'll probably find an item in the first 10 minutes or so of joining.
When you buy anything in the store, or bought the game when it was pay, your account gets "upgraded" the only perks for upgraded accounts are
1. access to the trading system
2. better chance to find hats
Thats it, the store has a minimium brownie points cost of like 5 bucks, if you really have your heart set on a weapon, just play until you find a hat, many people will trade a hat for many weapons (myself included)
BTW I'm looking for the rambo hair/headband to go with my bow and arrow loadout

The levelling system really only affects Strange weapons which can only be obtained through trades or from crates. And to be honest they are a waste of time. The other tiers of stuff available include Unusuals, Vintages, Normals, Haunted and Genuines.
- Unusuals normally refers to hats which have been unboxed from crates. These are just like other hats except it has an additonal animated effect. These include fireballs, the TF2 logo and hearts. And flies for Nurgle fans obviously - Vintages apply to all the items you had before a big update came out... I think it was the Mann Co update. Anyway these are worth more because they're older (read as "because they have blue writing").
- Normals are normal weapons and hats you pick up. Pretty much everything you didn't unbox or find before the big update.
- Haunted items apply more to items you find in the Underworld as of this year's Halloween update - any costume items you managed to find in the Underworld are Haunted. The Horsemann's Axe, when crafted, is also Haunted.
- Genuines are free items you get from pre-ordering another game. A good example is when Deus Ex came out - that had something like 10 items for TF2.
The levels on the items themselves though mean nothing. However I have found out there's now a number count on items found/obtained before a certain time period. Most notably for me is a guy mentioned bidding on for a #1 Eurika Effect (brand new engineer wrench). Apparently that had a bid of 500 keys put on it... that's the equivalent of 1000-1500 Refined metal
EDIT: Also Slarg, I've used the Backburner when it had no airblast too Now there's that new Pyro flamethrower that looks like a Steampunk flamer. Do want

OP, TF2 is a fantastic game. I've been enjoying the game since the beta now (mid-2007) and still playing. It's literally the only game that's been so consistently entertaining to me. The classes are varied enough to give completely different play-styles and the weapon variation changes it even further, so there's always a different way to play if you'd like a change.
Anywho, if you've got any questions, feel free to add me on Steam and I'll hop in-game with you and give you pointers/use the coaching mode if you'd like.
And a little clarification on some things other folks have said:
-Item levels don't change. Strange items have a kill counter that changes their name. Weapon item levels are all the same as another weapon of the same type, except for a small portion of vintage weapons (weapons that existed before trading). Hats, however, have a random level 0-100. It doesn't change after you get it.
-F2P accounts can't trade items to others, they can only receive them. They also can't wear hats or miscellaneous items. The only loadout slots they can change are weapons.
-If you plan on going premium, just buy a couple keys with your $5 and trade them for items you'd like. You should be able to get some hats or quite a few weapons. If you've got any questions, just ask.
Well, most of the time. This one dude kept bugging me on fortwars, then accused me for greifing after he attempted to destroy my perfectly acceptable fortifications.

Only I hate the Golden Wrench. Its too OP.
Trust the Midas Touch!
Isn't the Golden Wrench supposed to be OP, its like a special reward for being super awesomely uber or something like that. Anyways its a fun game, but I think its kind of BS that I had to pay for the game again to get "premium". I got the game on PS3 when it was just the orange box and I know that a lot of people also had it for 360, but when it went F2P on the PC I took advantage of it in order to get the one version that wasn't neglected and left out of every single freaking update known to man. I then bought some stuff just to get premium even though I had already paid for the game once, its just that it was on the PS3 instead of the almighty PC.
