So apparently TF2 is now free on Steam (I apologize if that's old news).
I've heard good things about it, but how is it really?
Should I give it a download?

It was alot better before they started dumbing it down with weapons.
"We make the Revolver do decent damage, but we make the Ambassador deal MORE damage if your good enough to get headshots. Another weapon adds +25% damage for 15% slower cloaking time, but WAIT! we will give them a watch which will cloak them instantly, so the 15% of nothing is NOTHING!"
Yes, the watch (Dead Ringer) was there first, but they should have thought of that.....
I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.
The dead ringer also dramatically changes the playstyle for the spy because he can't really cloak at will anymore and anyone with half a brain can identify when it goes off.

Doesn't mean that the new revolver isn't a straight upgrade for it.

I find most of the items fairly balanced but I find quite a few melee ones to be better than the standard melee items unfortunately. I haven't played in a long time is the blutsauger still better than the syringe gun?

Depends; I personally have always found the Syringe Gun to be vastly superior to the Blutsauger, just because it heals you faster. The Set for the medic is all the better for the even more increased heals.

That doesn't make sense syringe gun doesn't heal you when you hit a target.

Sorry, but I don't understand any of that.
Well, a little of it.

That's right, however the Medic automatically gains health over time, but the Blutsauger gets rid of that bonus. The Medic Set nets you even more health over time.

Basically, every unlock before had a clear upside and a downside; everything that did more damage was alot harder to use. Examples would be like the Direct Hit, a Rokkit Lawnchair which dealt significant damage if you hit a target spot on and even more so if they were in the air, but it had less splash damage. Another would be the Ambassador; it dealt less damage overall, but it gave you extra damage upon Headshots. Now, they add in weapons that have very clear upsides and downsides that are easily overlooked.
Happened about the time of the F2P announcement, if that explains it.

It does have a great set of mods, though. Just to list the few I play:
1) Saxton Hale Mode: Basically a Juggernaught; One player plays as a super powered character, and the other 26 people play as the normal classes. Usually the one wins
2) Fort Wars: Basically, you make your own arena before you fight in it.
3) Zombie Fortress: One team can only melee, the other team can use their full complement of stuff. (Quick question for all the people who play the game, does anyone know of a ZF game with Perks? I can't seem to find any recently.....)

I play on the saigns servers. They have this 'premium' mode that you can test for free for 15 minutes, giving you infinite ammo and some other cool stuff, such as the ability to play the Horseless Headless Horseman (albeit with the weapon and health of your class), and the Ghastly Healing Ghost.
I really advise the Saigns servers to start with. You can search for their servers in the list, they have every map as a server with always lots of people on it. It might sound like a very bad commercial, but Id take them.
Also, the best medic healing weapon is the quick fix.

syringe gun heals you when you don't have it out, +1 regen
there's a 2 item set of a crossbow and mellee weapon that heals you an additional +1 regen (all the time)
they are quite nice if you have someone to heal, but if you have to defend yourself, you are usually fk'd

Especially with the Set, that crossbow is pretty much worthless as a weapon, too little heal that can be intercepted by an enemy (Don't worry, it damages them, it doesn't heal them)
I've never feared Death or Dying. I've only feared never Trying.
The crossbow isn't useless if you can use it. By that I mean if you can use a Huntsman you can use a Crossbow. And that set (2 weapons) gives you +1 health regen so you gain 4 health back per timebracket. Dead handy.
To OP: TF2 is great fun. Lots of mods, mostly good weapons, decent communities all round (avoid the "F2P = NOOB" servers, you'll understand why) and a good gaming experience. I'm normally on the TBNGC Hale server - great bunch of guys, several of which know of (and/or play) 40k
I love TF2, one of my all time favourite games. And also, a huge bonus, is that i'm very very good which is surprising because i'm normally only average-good on most games.
I can play any class, depend on the map and situation in game to be honest, probably best as Pyro and Sniper (especially now I have the sniper set so head shots don't kill me...).
But TF2 can be fun even if your not very good, its not really that serious.
Ok, so I have it, and I love it. But I am confused.
How do you get new weapons? or level weapons up? are all weapons the same base weapon with levels? if someone could enlighten me, I would be happy.

You unlock them by playing more or by doing achievements.
It's a good game mostly but you've got to get lucky to get balanced teams. It seems every other round one side is vastly out matched in skill by the other side.

It's random sure, but quite a few things are used to build other things, and you can always make scrap out of the ones that aren't.
A pity you can't make scrap out of gift boxes.

Just saying, while the PC version has tons of micropayments, they're all entirely optional and mostly used by those whom are just too impatient to get them normally.

It's alot more convenient to get stuff via payments, sure. but it's possible to get everything via playing.
Also, "Leveling Up" weapons is just the newest "TEXT IZ IMPORTANTZ" thing valve has cooked up to get people to think they are special, it doesn't affect gameplay.
I use my Vintage Flare Gun, not because it's Vintage, but because it's the one I had before everything went Vintage. It has served me well in the past, I don't see why I should get rid of it for my "Somewhat Lethal Flare Gun".

Exactly my philosophy. However the christmas 2011 item (finally something for the pyro) seems to be restricted to (holiday) crates.
