My friend bought his first finecast. A cryptek. It has no chest. and its fingers are all different (incorrect) lengths.
I have a metal Captain Stern but I hate his rules. Now I have to buy a Finecast replacement for him, be it Draigo or Crowe.
Thus I wont be buying replacment.
The only Finecasts I've seen have been horrible. I know I know this isn't a hate thread but the OP asked...
Violent hatred towards finecast.

When the mold is right its fantastic, nice detail and very light. However the problem is not all the molds are perfect and miscasts are still an issue.

It is far easier to work with than with metal, requires almost no pinning, and has more detail. True, there are some casting issues but for the most part those seem to be getting resolved now.

Neutral. Most of my Eldar Aspect Warriors are Fine Cast and they seem to have turned out okay, no worse than metal I have seen over the years. My Farseer and Warlocks and Njal, are just okay(the swords my farseer and warlock keep bending back even after heating) and Njal has lots of pits and such). Still waiting to see if they can improve upon it.

In theory, resin is better then metal, unfortunately, finecast is not better than metal. The 4 core issues with finecast IMO are:
1. Poor moulding quality. Finecast prone to bubbling and warping.
2. High rate of failure (makes it also difficult to obtain replacements).
3. Low melting point and durability (making the figures unsuitable for gaming)
4. More expensive than older metal figures.
I have high standards from big companies like GW which is why I selected the “hate” option (I’d choose a lesser option if it was a smaller company that had some sort of good explanation and action plan to tackle the issue).
In an ideal world, if finecast did not have QA issues as well as the cost saving being passed to the consumer (in the same vein as PP does when they switch a product from metal to plastiresin) finecast would be a lot better.

I initially voted mild dislike but came back to change my response to neutral, or maybe even slightly positive.
I just used the Finecast Chaos Exalted Hero to kitbash a halberd-wielding BSB. I had a hard time making the first cuts on the model but only because it was so well-made I was afraid I'd screw it up. Being new to the hobby, my skill level would not have allowed me to do the same thing had the model been metal.

I think it's a small improvement. Well, more than a small improvement but not a large improvement.
The extra clear detail is really great, but in every model I've gotten in finecast, weapons such as staffs have always been practically flat, not round. Which is why my shadowseer looks like he's holding a flat piece of junk instead of a delicate staff.
Never had that problem with FW, so I just hope that the folks at GW will get more experienced with resin and get rid of stuff of like that.

I really dislike metal models, I love GW's plastic models - so easy to work with for both painting and modelling. I'll take resin over metal any day of the week. Oh...oh but the few finecast models that I've bought have just been an absolute pain in the tukkus, driving me completely insane. The daemon prince I bought is still sitting in multiple pieces until I can pin the crap out of him to make him fit together cos he just doesn't in so many places and so many ways. At the same time my partner has been assembling Forge World resin. Whilst there's been....well, more than a bit of cursing, it's nothing compared to the 'head meet wall' frustration that we're both having with the GW Finecast.

Neutral because I have yet to buy a finecast myself. Whether it is good or bad right now, I think the quality will improve with time. I'll probably wait a while longer before buying one.

Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it. Don't wait for it. Just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee. |

The material is good, and I love the potential it can have. But GW has unfortunately messed it up, having lots of miscasts and showing poor product surveillance.

The main problem is that they use the single-use moulds for the finecast so it's pot luck each time whether it goes horribly wrong or not. I'm not completely au fait with moulding, but would it be possible to use the sort of dedicated moulds they have for plastics on resin?
The price issue is due to general inflation and because without it Games Workshop would be running at a loss - it's unfortunate, but prices are rising everywhere, I'd rather pay a couple of pounds more than see the company go under.
So far, my finecast models have be fine, sometimes there are minor imperfections but they're easily fixed. I was thankful for a finecast Treeman, since putting the beastie together in metal would've been a royal pain in my arse, though it's hard to judge any imperfections because it's supposed to look like a big warped mess anyway
In conclusion, mild improvement, easier to put together, but I do still love metal models

I really like finecast. It easier to clean up, assemble, convert and paint. To make things even better there is a high possibility getting a defecteve model which of course means you can get a new model free of charge while keeping the defective model for conversion bits. Thx to Zagstrukk I now have extra slugga arm for my nob that has been unfinished for months. Only thing that bugs me is the increased prize as metal minis were already expensive. If you want to start that nurgle army you've always wanted then now it is the time.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.
If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in. |

I'm okay with the models, especially with GWs replacement policies. Anything too bad to be salvaged is replaced.
I'm not okay with the cost. Less expensive mediums should not cost more.

QFT. Finecast is better in a lot of ways, but the price increase is ridiculous. The librarian terminator has had about a fiver added to it, despite it being in a cheaper medium.
