I don't really mind spartan versus spartan in MP that much.
I had always imagined it as being in some kind of weird alternate universe where they fight and it is broadcast on TV across the Universe...

Yeah, you must not have played FF7 or think we're talking about something else. There is no comparison between 7 and 13.

Or you just like to say controversial things about FF to get rises out of people.

Uh, no. You should try playing the two sometime. There's very little comparison between the two.

Just because it was good, doesn't mean it isn't overrated. FF7 is heralded as the godsend of gaming. Nothing can *ever* live up to it. I'm sorry, but as good as it was, it wasn't THAT good.

As for games I just couldn't get in to that most people consider good:
Gears
Bioshock
Half-Life 2

There have been a few games that I’ve played, that have been highly acclaimed and yet appeared sub par to me when I’ve played them.

• FF7
• Fallout 3
• Ocarina of Time (currently playing the updated version on the 3DS)
• Dawn of War 2: Chaos Rising

I’ll have to say that I was glad I played them in the sense that I can say that I played them but it does make me a lot more wary when trusting other people’s opinions on what constitutes a good game.

When did you play ff7? If you played it recently, it is hard to get past the graphics and gameplay. When it came out, it was great though.

Graphics/outdated gameplay aren’t an issue for me as I’m somewhat of a retro gamer. I played it a couple of years ago (when it was first released on the PS network for Australians) and didn’t like it. I also gave it a second shot last year and it was a real struggle for me to get sucked into the storyline and gameplay.

Played FF6 recently alongside Super Mario Land 2 for the first time and absolutely adore them. I’ve also replayed FF8 and Links Awakening DX recently (played them extensively when they first came out) and I still love them.

That works for me and it is a nice way of putting it in my opinion.

I played it when it first came out. Pretty awesome game. Then it got overrated. The same thing happens in movies. I managed to watch Titanic and Avatar before everyone went crazy over it.

People frequently take nice things and say they are the best things ever which completely leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

Any get a chance to play the remake of FF1 on the Ipad? It looked pretty awesome.

FF8 was the best, /discussion.

Lol, anyways I'd have to say that Halo Reach definitely fell into the "why am I even playing this" territory. I knew how it ended, the game was practically the same as it's always been, very little changed.

Oh also Dragon Age. I still can't make myself beat the first one. The mind numbing combat (pause, set tactics, unpause, 3 seconds later, repeate) absolutely kills that game for me.

See, I was the opposite; I loved DA:O, simply because it was slower paced. You had to actually watch what you were doing, where everyone was, and adjust your tactics. Mind you, this would have been better in Top Down like what hte PC had, but whatever.

Can't get into DA2 because of it.....

I've played and beaten both, along with all the FF games except for X-2.

FF13 had better, though not good, combat while FF7 had a superior story. FF13 required considerably less level grinding due to its linearity, while FF7 required quite a bit. The exploration elements in FF7 were mostly tacked on, and the mini-games (basically, the Gold Saucer) were largely boring, and or grind based. Considering the two optional characters, one is largely irrelevant to the story, and the other is useless due to poor limit break.

FF13 is the worse of the two, but neither is especially good.

Indeed it doesn't, but for many people of my generation (and really, just many people) FF7 was their first encounter with a JRPG, and so its treated as definitive of the genre. It does have a solid story, that went places which many games of the day would not, but its gameplay is pretty weak, and it suffers from all the power-scaling problems that FF is known for.

Dragon Age as I have explained many times.

Seemed like a good game but it was terrible. slowed AI with teammates. No strategy worked. Everything turned into a clusterfeth. Spend points to make team less slowed.

No thanks.

I actually rather liked Dragon Age's combat, even if the game basically forces you to roll a mage if you don't want to struggle through the period before Morrigan can learn heal. There were also some pretty easy ways to break the game. High level rogues were better tanks than warriors, and the best possible tank is an Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage.

The biggest weakness, I thought, was that, aside from Shale, Morrigan, and Zevran, the characters were pretty bland.

That said, the world was pretty cool, and used a number of racial tropes that aren't frequent elements of fantasy RPGs. Hell, the Dwarfs were actually unique in being devious, backstabbing pricks. For me its much like Mass Effect in being a fairly bland story set in a really well presented universe.

With me, it was Deus Ex. Honestly, I wanted to get into it. I tried! It just never clicked for me. It might be its age showing, but I just find myself longing for modern-day standards in RPGs. I was actually really excited for Human Revolution when I saw that first trailer, but then I went back and tried Deus Ex and found it very meh for me.

And just to jump onto the Final Fantasy discussion, Final Fantasy VII remains my absolute favorite Final Fantasy game across the entire series (and I've played all the "main" series games with exception to 2 and 5). I may be looking at them with rose-tinted glasses, but the story was just fantastic, and it's the only game for which I've bought the entire 4-disk soundtrack. I even bought and watched Advent Children to the point where I had damn near the entire script memorized.

To be fair, the combat was awful.

Nano-augmented J.C. Denton aims a pistol with the same ability as a toddler?

It was an innovation at the time but, like X-COM, its age shows (as you said).

I, personally, consider Human Revolution the superior title, excepting the boss fights.

I'll say that I like FF7, but I know that I only like for nostalgia's sake. I wouldn't play through the whole game again, just like I only boot up Enemy Unknown for the sake of remembrance.

Actually, hes right. I played FFVII when it came out. The main complaint of FFXIII was that you were railroaded towards the next objective all the time; and there was no chance for exploration. Well. Guess what. Until practically the final disc (which isn't long) you are completely railroaded. Theres not really anything you CAN explore. 7 and the later FF's suffer from the railroading problem. However, 7-10 have good stories which make up for it (which is a legitimate complaint for FFXIII).

I did not like ME1. Picked it up and didn't finish the first mission. Hated the mechanics, they felt just so clunky. Didn't want anything to do w/ ME2, but broke down and bought it cheep. Liked it, loved it and looking forward to ME3.

One of my friends insisted I play Gears (2 maybe?) with him co-op and how awesome it was. I played for about an hour and a half and faked a smile because he was enjoying himself so much, but it was just very... run and shoot to me. I kinda felt like I'd already played it never having played it.

Thats the #1 complaint of ME1, clunkiness. Its hilarious to see people complaining about ME2 combat. Besides regen health and those silly veins, imo its much better than 1.

Given Biowares recent track record though and EA's money grubbing schemes, ME3 could be a flop.

My list:

FF 8 and 9. I LOVED 6 (3 on the SNES), and 7 was amazing (at the time). But, 8 and 9 I never managed to get into. I gave them a shot, but it was just too boring.

Gears 3. 1 was epic and introduced some great mechanics into the world of gaming. 2 was still fun, although repetitive. 3 was just more of the same. I played it, I beat it, but I just did a single multi-player match before putting it back on the shelf.

Halo 3. Basically, it's the same story as Gears. Halo 2 had the best multiplayer (it only beats 1 because it was on Live). But, 3 was just the same game with a few tweaks.

Dead Rising. Yeah, I didn't have an HDTV at the time, so it was basically unplayable.

Civ 4 and 5. The original was absolutely great. Civ 2 is an all time classic and one of the best games ever. 3 was fun. But, by 4, the game started to drag a bit. And, 5 was too buggy to even play.

Starcraft 2. I got 1/3 of the way through the campaign. I tried a few online matches. It's really disappointing. I won't be getting the sequels.

And, finally...

Goldeneye. I played PC games. I had already seen equivalent or better graphics in a FPS. I was already used to the concept of multiplayer gaming. It really was nothing new to me.
