I very rarely import anything, but I send parcels abroad almost everyday.

I mark the customs lable "toy parts" with the value as declared on the invoice.

Its the customers responsibility to pay any extra fees/charges. My Terms and Conditions contain this-

"Anvil Industry products which are shipped outside the EU will have a customs declaration attached, Products you import may attract additional costs such as local sales taxes, which Anvil Industry is not liable for."

That said, none of my customers have ever contacted me to say they had to pay anything. I guess its hit and miss..

Somewhere in south-central England.

It depends partly on where you are sending stuff.

The customs limit for Australia is $1,000 AUD, which is about £670.

The UK customs limit is £18 = $26.7

I'm writing a load of fiction. My latest story starts here... This is the index of all the stories...

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Selling new products in stores we pay VAT, selling used items between individuals we don't have to.

I think this is a major point, the guitar example that was cited as needing tp pay VAT was it labeled as "guitar" or rather "Used Guitar"?

How items are labeled makes a huge differance in how they are screened. Italy for example has a 30% VAT on all imported toys, but it does not apply to model parts. Depending on the choice of verbage in the customs description can influence a customer paying or not paying VAT. If I were sending a used item I would make sure that it was listed as such as most countries don't tax used items. (although some might) Generally the more specific the item description is the better as most VAT is assigned to general categories, models and toy parts may not be taxed while complete toys are for example.

But that's stuff that I've learned from a mix of experience and investigation, inexperienced sellers and buyers may not make those connections.
