Shhh! Maybe he wants to French to take the blame. Dutch is confusing enough

OT, if the enjoyment one takes from a hobby is worth the cost, there's no problem.

My hobbies over the years;
- Video games. I've still got my original Nintendo, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Game Boy, GBA, DS & DSxl. Plus the games to go with them...
Sure I never bought alot of games, sticking mainly to Zelda, Dragon Warrior, Final Fantasy, Golden Sun and Ogre Battle 64, but when I look at it and see how much money is invested there, I kinda cringe.

- Competitive Hockey. All I can say is, at least my dad beat the idea of being a goalie out of my head.
In one year alone, we played over 80+ games once you combined all of our exhibition, league, tournament & provincial championship games (took home the bronze medal!)
Oh, and our team went to England & Scotland too that same year for 5 friendlies with local teams, including the Scottish Women's National team. Suffice to say, that was a wallet-breaking year!

- Reading!

- Walking.

- Warhammer.

So I think overall my toy soldiers are pretty cheap by comparison.

I would have to look at the friendships and the good times that have come from my gaming experiences; and say that the money invested is far our weighed by the value I attach to those friendships and good times.

The road trips to tournaments far away or just the time spent painting to the we hours of the morning with dear friends.

Good trade I think.

I sorely miss those days for sure, and it was easily money well-spent! That year we went to England, we also won not only provincial bronze, but 2 gold medals & a couple silver medals as well in our other tournaments. If Missassauga hadn't cheated so badly in the semi's, we would have taken silver at the provincals. One of the other forwards from that team is still a good friend as well.

I was just pointing out that by comparison, in 15 years of the GW hobby, I've maybe spent the combined cost of perhaps my 2 years playing Bantam AA girls hockey!
And this hobby has also given my a number of lasting friendships as well, so i tend to put it right up there with my hockey as the 'best' money I've spent on events/things I don't actually need, but rather simply wanted. (the lack of concusions involved in playing competitive warhammer is a huge plus however!)

I buy a majority of my minis from discounters (MINIATURE MARKET AKA JESUS) and E-bay. I think the most I've spent at one time was 110$ USD for 6 crisis suits still in the box on E-bay . I did buy my hammerheads at full value (my little bit to support my local gaming store), but not at once. In the long run it's expensive but If you strech it our it's cheaper then most hobbies. I generly compare it to Video Gaming, for the price of a game system I can buy 2-3 battle force sets. For the price of a game I can buy a tank or 2-3 boxes of infantry. Also with my Miniatures I don't have to replace them every 2 years either!

It's also easy for many of us to not have anything similar to compare it to. I have 4 year old twin girls, and this pas Christmas my wife and I decided to buy them some Playmobil stuff. For those of you without children, Playmobil is considered to be a high-quality, name brand toy, like Lego.

It's basically the same thing, plastic toys. A house kit with 2 adult figures, and 2 children figures, is like 35 dollars. A mermaid with a seahorse (yeah, a giant seahorse) is like 7 dollars. If you compare say, an Annihalation Barge to the house kit, there's more plastic in the Playmobil, but less detail.

What we're paying for is the detail. It is expensive, but if you tried to do "Playmobilhammer 40k" it would look so stupid no one would join you. Well, maybe someone would, but that's not the point 40k isn't that much more expensive than any other toys, our stuff is just smaller and more detailed than kids toys.

So much win.

In topic WH40K its expensive only, if you just look at the price you need to get started, but, since the money you spent it will be worthy the moment you start to play the game, and paint your miniatures, making the scenary just for fun, and such, its pretty much worth it, i think.

Warhammer is incredibly cheap compared to my other main hobby, which is collecting and shooting firearms. My whole army costs less than a flashlight I've got one one of my guns.

I always compare it to when I would work on cars 8 or so years ago... I've always wanted to build a turbo kit for some cars, but pricing it out and making it fairly reliable would have ran about $6000~ ... Then trying to sell that car afterwords and getting NOTHING back out of that investment , it's just a big waste.

With 40k, this is a game I intend on playing for easily the next 8-10 years. I enjoy it an awful lot and it doesnt cost even 1/10th the amount of modding a car fully.

Its not just wargaming its most expensive hobbies. I get a lot of it about my cars

"why do you need a car that will go that fast when the fastest you can legaly go is 70"
"why does it only do 18mpg"
"your just burning money" etc etc

Like 99% of hobbies you do it because YOU enjoy it

Everyone who plays any GW game needs to realizee that this is a hobby and you're not going to have an entire army over night. A hobby is something you do everyonce in a while for fun (or to get away from your wife) It wouldn't be as much fun if you were fininshed with your army in a week.
