I get that a bit, other hobbies cost just as much, such as surfing for example.

Everyone perceives value and worth in different ways so I wouldn't worry too much.

By the same token however, that's why many people have stopped buying GW miniatures; because they have reached or gone by the point that they consider the price to be good value or 'worth it'.

In the end, you justify the cost by spending the time to paint and design your army. With the amount of time I've invested in my dwarves and Eldar, I could have played Skyrim 100% complete 6 times, but then I took an arrow to the knee.

I dislike Smurfs.

Hi.
if you earn your cash, spend it on what you want to.
if you belive you get good value for money from 40k, fair enough.

However, alot of people compare GW prices to other companies prices, and can not justify paying the extra GW charge if they dont use a GW store.

I am talking about the cost of a 'full army' to play a 'full game '.
Not the price of individual minatures.

I have quit paying GW for my hobby supplies , as they now charge over double, (in real terms,) what they did 10 years ago.

It's called Brother Syndrome. Brothers love giving each a hard time alot of the time. Don't listen to him. It is the fun and joy of the hobby which matters.

Everyone and their mom owns a console and games these days.

Consoles run $100-$200 USD easy, plus games at $60 USD each new, or old for various prices.

The next time someone says the hobby costs too much, ask them how much they have spend on their 360/ps3. Then laugh because odds are you've spent less.

Warhammer 40k is expensive. However, as many people have said, other hobbies are also expensive. I think the problem is that warhammer is overpriced in comparison to toys. The markup on GWs products is astronomical. This being said, there are many other industries with similar markups, such as video game software and movies. For some reason most people do not consider those items overpriced.

Warhammer 40K is expensive, but you shouldn't defend it on the grounds that other hobbies are also expensive.

The value in miniatures games is that you can use the miniatures again and again without laying out more money.

Yes, Warhammer is not a cheap hobby. But everybody needs a hobby, and I dont see why people should complain if someone wants o spend their money on a 40k/ WHFB related item.

Let's face it. As we get older, we don't really outgrow playing with toys. Our toys just get much more expensive. You need something to do. Spending $50 for a night out at a bar twice a week gets you two hangovers, broke and fat. Some people go for that, but I never found it very exciting.

For that same price you can quickly build up a large army collection, start a hobby that can provide hours of enjoyment and a game to play that can challenge you as well as provide a lot of fun. And then you can go broke and get fat too as a bonus.

GW is pricey stuff. No one says you cant have just as much fun playing a different system...

Flames of War $200-$300 for a whole army...
WarMachine $250-$350 for a whole army...

GW 40k $500-800 for a whole army....

I dont think the FoW players arent having a blast for less!

I got friends who do hard drugs, I got friends who just buy tons of clothes, I got friends who play paintball. And guess what? I can not OD from warhammer, I only wear one pair of pants at a time and I have never had fun with paintball.

What I am trying to say is that there are worse things to spend your money on

^This a thousand times for me!
And the next time someone says you're wasting money, ask them how much they spend on their crap.
Especially drinking (if of age of course!)! Drinking doesn't leave anything worth mentioning behind when you're
done. Spending money on 40k at least you'll have something to show for the investment.

Don't know about the rest of you but it's saved me a fortune needing to buy toy soldiers stopped me from ever starting smoking...........Presume a 10 a day habit that's 70 a week £6 for 20. £21 a week. Put like that I save a GW boxset a week because of the hobby!

It is an oath we honour. Hobbies exist to take up your time and money. Warhammer takes up less than paintball, cars, a heavy drinking habit, or a number of other ways we pass the time. The economics of toy soldiers is its own topic, but I can justify it considering how much fun I have building, painting, and gaming with the models.

Its all a matter of perspective, my other hobbies involve racing cars, triathlons, adventure races and skiing. In just bike equipment I'm over $3k in a couple years, car parts (not cars, just parts) over $20k, and my skis etc were over $1,500. So the $1,500 I've spent on 40k stuff over the years isn't really that pricey by comparison. To note, I'm currently and Army Officer, and have paid for my hobbies since I was 16 and employed. When I think about a couple dollars for a miniature, plus paint, basing, glue, etc, and then factor in the time I spend building/painting/playing, the cost per hour goes down quite a bit, and there is more of a lasting effect than playing a videogame.

Whenever I'm questioned/accused of the cost of my geeky hobbies, I always bring up the same argument:

"I don't drink or smoke. Ask yourself how much you spend on cigarettes and in a bar or club each week, and multiply that by 4. Then let's compare who wastes more money each month".

I walked in the house last night having bought IA11 (great book by the way).

The Mrs asked how much it cost and in an off guard moment i told her the real price! Quickly recovering I added it was the last of the Christmas money I got. (That didn't make it until New Year )
