Travel back and forth from Europe quite a bit, and I can say that border and customs and Europe makes me feel much more welcome there as a tourist than the USA makes me feel as a citizen. Last time I returned we were lined up single file in a dark hallway, surrounded by drug dogs, interviewed with the most hostility by the COB, it is almost like we were a burden on them for having the audacity to travel into our own country.

I've had mixed experiences.

Some customs agents will look at me, look at my passport, and say "Welcome back, dude."

Other customs agents will look at me, look at my passport, and say "What could a 25 year old possibly be doing for business in Turkey?"

Still other customs agents will, as you say, line you up in a dark hallway and surround you with dogs.

Its actually better than the overzealous 2nd example. The dudes that put you in a hallway are just doing what they're told, and if you play the game there is no, or very little, risk.

The guy that wonders why you're 25 and went to Turkey on business is trying to exercise his own power, generally speaking.

Thankfully his power goes as far as the door, but getting out of a possible search is trickier.

The Rocket on my left under a dog blanket. Tbone in my lap under another dog blanket, and Rusty the tank sprawled on the rest of the sofa. The little heaters are excellent on a cold morning, sipping coffee and watching the news.

I had this vision of you on your couch in a dark living room surrounded by dogs as the security line shuffles past. Like in a comic book with glasses glare being the only discernible feature.

I am thinking Dr Evil, except with wiener dogs instead of the cat...

Thats probably because the majority of Europe's border control pretty much sucks. Particularly the UK. They pretty much are the definition of fail.
