Because it's only bad when Americans stereotype and ride around on their high horse. Everyone knows that.

Yes, I know it's a NZ flag.
Then Why say Australia?
And yes most Americans take offense to jokes that are amied at them or the states it's just how it is, yes some my take the jokes as a joke (like they are intended) but most of America can not cope with jokes about them, like if I made a joke about, ohhh, lets say 9/11, (and not even a bad one, just a whitty remark, which I wouldn't anyways, but being hypothetical works.) the Americans would pull out their 45's and deagles and yell "TERRORIST" and blow me away, and no I am not exaggerating.

He's got a point though. Nobody acts like that. What your talking about is a GROSS overexaggeration of how americans react to american jokes.
Let's put it another way. The chance of you finding someone who shoots you over an american joke is the same as me finding someone who shoots me over dropping an F bomb or saying GD. Sure there's people out there, but you have to TRY to find people like that.

Ali G is great. Borat was great. Bruno was pretty good; great in spots, lame in others.
This should be funny.
I like that Sacha Baron Cohen's doing some other stuff now, too. He's good. I liked him in Hugo, and in Sweeney Todd.

Looks like it could be funny. Not the biggest fan of these type of movies but from time to time I see a funny one.
Ali G had it moments.
Borat was pretty funny. Had a friend from Kazakhstan and some of his mannerisms were very similar, he seemed rather backwards in America but not ignorant.
Bruno was out right horrible.

Borat had some really funny moments. I mean, sure, there was all the poo humour and the like, but there was actually some good stuff in there just watching people get sucked in by this obvious, ridiculous caricature.
I didn't see much of Bruno, but what I saw seemed to miss the point, as it looked like a lot more of the targets were in on the joke, which pretty much defeated the point of the whole thing.
So, I don't know, I guess I'll wait for the reviews. Automatically Appended Next Post: Necroshea wrote:It's not so much uncomfortable, its more like watching one of the scary movies. I thought Borat was great, and have never been to a movie at the cinema with so many people laughing. Bruno was good in parts, but some scenes were a bit too much. There are some pretty good scenes he did years ago as part of the Ali G show which I think were a bit better though.

Yeah, the Bruno character definitely worked better in the original short skits. The one with the guys on Spring Break in Florida, for example? Brilliant.
Some scenes in the movie were really good though. Like the Ron Paul one, and the Latoya Jackson one, and most of the stuff involving babies- both the adopted one and the toddler actor moms being interviewed and saying their babies would have no problem with explosions, extremes of heat and cold, being in cars while being stunt-driven, or dressed up as baby nazis, etc.

Since he's not playing a character like Bruno, Borat, or Ali G, isn't this less of his mockumentaries and more of just a comedy?
I'll probably watch it once it hits video, but I don't see myself paying theatre prices for this film, seeing as how I still haven't seen Bruno, and I've only seen Borat on dvd...
Still, like it has been said, the race scene is hilarious

If we can move away from needless and stultifying ill informed critiques of national psyches it'd be for the best please. There's plenty of places where you can indulge this to your heart's content, a thread on the off topic board of a wargaming forum where the topic is a forthcoming movie isn't quite the place to do this.
If we could lay off the name calling too it'd be appreciated. Thanks.

I think the phrase you're looking for is "Americans tend to be more nationalistic than the citizens of other first world nations."
Whether or not that's true, is up for question.
The French, for example, are pretty damn nationalistic; both by stereotype and reality.

That's not what hypocrisy means.
One can tolerate jokes, but really, really hate being confused for someone of another nationality without being hypocritical.

Oh look, another thread where dogma tries to support an argument by claiming that only he knows the true meaning of words.

Meh. Cohen's comedy is more miss than hit with me.
He can occasionally pull out a hilarious gag or two, though, I'll give him that.

Hypocrisy, in this context, is the pretense of holding a belief while simultaneously expressing contradictory sentiments.
Saying "Americans can't take jokes." while being offended that someone, in a potentially non-jocular fashion, mistook him for a person of a different origin is not hypocrisy because the seemingly offensive comment isn't necessarily a joke. Hell, saying "Americans can't take jokes." doesn't even imply that being unable to take a joke is bad, so even if being mistaken for an Aussie were meant in jest, it wouldn't make the original speaker a hypocrite.
I'm not claiming that only I know what words mean, I'm claiming that you didn't use the word correctly and, more broadly, that you make a habit of using it when it isn't appropriate.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh. |

It's like people just look right over the fairly large blob of red text, as well as the the whole [MOD] bit attached to it.
Anyways I think at this point people are going to get tired of it. Borat was ok, bruno was...ok in some spots. This just looks like another attempt at "lol nationalist jokes so funny". Whatever happened to being new and original? I guess in 2 years he'll make a movie about north korea.
