It says THE unit that destroyed it through shooting can assault it. Did the warriors destroy it? No. Can they assault? No, because the unit they shot at is no longer there

No they are not the only ones that can. But units that shoot can only assault that units that they shot. This is an exception to that rule. Therefor if you shot at the vehicle you can only assault that vehicle. This exception gives the one who destroyed the vehicle the option to assault the unit inside. Of course anyone who hasn't shot or shoots the unit inside after the vehicle is destroyed can also assault that unit.

edit: as been stated any units that have shot the vehicle but did not destroy it cannot assault that round as the vehicle they shot is no longer in play.
