Mmmm, it being Leap Year, HBMC Day should be Feb 29th, as the deep outpouring of affection doesn't actually break you down except once every four years. As the interweb probably couldn't handle you send out smiley faces and internet hugs.

It will have to be British English. I can say coming out the other end of university and being English myself that there are no other forms of correct English outside of British as far as professional literature/word processing/writing goes in this country. When I was at university one of my friends missed the 'u' out of colour, added a few 'z's' in where there should have been an 's' and was dropped a 'spelling and grammar' grade because of it.

The only exception I know of is computer programming but that's literally because the language itself is a bastardised version of our language.

Plus it's fairly credible that a GW marketing campaign for their biggest release would fit on one side of A4 - Flashman

Is the economy really so bad that when we hear about a job opening, we assume that someone had to have left that job? Are growth and new jobs really that foreign of a concept?

GWs design staff isn't a fast growing field, but it does have a high turnover.

I might give it a try, if only because it would be amusing to give them a twelve-mission Space Hulk campaign as a writing sample. But then again, Nottingham is a bit of a dump, so maybe not.

I'd apply for this, but it requires me to live in the UK. Now while I wouldn't mind a stint in good ol UK...my wife probably wouldn't go for that. Hell, it would be better than what I'm doing now.

Sounds a bit joyless, to be honest.

"Toe this line first and foremost. We can teach game design."

Can't blame them, but it's a little sad. I'd have liked to have seen one of those key points being about designing the world's best game systems, rather than reinforcing their financial goals and legal defensiveness.

Man, I dont get why people just rag on the people that wrote their crappy codex. I mean....in the end, its not all their fault that the codex sucks. I mean, they play test those things a gak load, they have to. I say its 25% the fault of the guys that wrote it, 25% the fault of the higher ups that okayed the damn thing and sent it to print, probably with just a cursory look, and 50% the fault of the slowed playtesters who are supposed to notice and point out the things that are entirely fethed up about it. I mean, the guy writing it is (cross your fingers) doing his best to balance it out, but without playtesting it a gak ton to see how the new dex works in actual games, you really are just going off a best guess. Anyways, my two cents, and I think that it would be cool to work for GW, even though they can be complete dicks, if for nothing else, than to get a chance (no matter how slim) to work your way up and help change things a bit.

I agree that it's not the designer's fault 100% when problems arise, but I do feel it is the designers responsibility to address those problems. Either adjusting during play testing or FAQ or errata after the book is released. There have been comments made that some problems are identified by playtesters, but are ignored by the designer. Some don't like criticism. Supposedly Matt Ward is one of these and the story came up after the Fantasy Demon Army Book came out.

story?

It is extremely easy to notice badly worded rules, especially when proofreading. What's bad is when the designer sees it and goes "that could be worded a bit tighter. Actually you know what, naaaaah." I mean really. It barely requires any brainpower to see something vague, then make it not vague anymore.

Just to point out, the opening is for an assistant games designer whose role is to produce some text for products and to assist actual games developers with producing error free rules.

So it doesn't sound like any actual games developers that we know by name have left, but rather this sounds like either a new position or one behind the scenes who helps to proof-read rules looking for errors. Especially if its the former (a new position being added) then it is a good sign of them attempting to get better about producing rules with less ambiguities, which is a good thing!

But carry on with complaining about the text of a job posting...

What I've heard is that the playtesters do bring this stuff up, but it gets ignored because they don't feel like changing it, or because they purposely want to leave it vague for whatever reason.
