The wind swept peaks

I live in Boulder, CO, so the majority of people here are tattooed freaks, dirty nature lovers, and retired hippies.
I usually get a glimmer of interest and some questions when the topic comes up... it's far from the weirdest hobby to have here.

I'm both selfish and rational. I'm scheming, secretive and manipulative; I use knowledge as a tool for personal gain, and in turn obtaining more knowledge. At best, I am mysterious and stealthy; at worst, I am distrustful and opportunistic.

Tried to explain it to her a couple of times, but she doesn't get it, thinks we just should put them on the table and shoot at eachother.

That is probably the weirdiest I've had, just because she got all the other concepts.

This. I have a friend who simply does not get this at all. Every time warhammer comes up he says something to the effect of "so whoever can afford to buy more models just wins right?" And every time I explain to him that there is a point system. Then it all just happens again.

Hi, I'm Mike Leon. You may remember me from such totally metal action adventure novels as KILL KILL KILL and RATED R

I Don't normally get strange responses, with my mates now they just accept it and get that i play and I don't need to explain as they used to play for a short time. although the people that do ask me I will then take the time to tell them about it because I think if they ask they'll want to know, so I let them know.

explain that the points is for balance? like any team game football/rugby etc, you can only have 11 or so men but you pick the ones you like/think will do best. Some peoples logic barriers are hilarious.

Of course, there are plenty of wargames that don't use points.

In fact, sitting down with a friend or two and mapping out a scenario with completely unbalanced and thematic forces can be quite a bit more fun that saying, 'Hey, I'll see you in a week at the game store. 1500 points'.

Why not play the game the way they want to? Forget the points, equip the soldiers in a way that seems fair (or unfair!) to the both of you, and have at it. Historically, armies have never been 'balanced'. Rommel and Montgomery didn't sit down and agree on a 'points limit' when they fought in the desert, and neither did Napoleon and Wellington, or Caesar and Vercingetorix. And neither will Aske and Harkin (2,000 years from now, in the Battle of Sen Dion). Oddly enough, the people who don't see the, well, the 'point' of points are probably thinking the same thing about you when it comes to 'logic barriers'.

QFT I have to agree an "all models" game can be fun and we have done them for fun at my local GW. qoh and "walker wars" were you take every walker you have from all the different races and pit them against each other. Super Heavys allowed.
Also the larger "Veihcle wars-just the same but on a bigger scale

Free from GW's tyranny and the hobby is looking better for it

English Russia.

I play an ECW game where there are no points value, you rolll dice to determine what troops and quality they are before you start, it isnt a game for hard nose tourney plays, its a lot of fun as you could end up with a pile of raw millitia or an elite band of men. it's more realistic and a lot more fun than just using an agreed points value.

it does have a points system but the writers discourage it.

the rules are called Forlorn hope if anyones interested.

Oh man, the first monster I see I'm going to sneak up behind him, whip out my wand, and shoot my magic all over his ass.

SlaveToDorkness wrote:Dad's reactions are great. Mine always said "how come you can't get that interested about your schoolwork?" Like he'd never been a kid in school before.

My dad gives me the "why cant you be this interested in school" comment ALL THE TIME. if i talk about ANYTHING that excites me (my youtube, my warhammer, my comics) he gives me that comment. the other one i get is "All you care about is those stupid toy soldiers!" Like, no, i actaully give a damn about other things, like my family, my school. Theres more to my life than the thing that I'm talking about.

The weirdest thing that happens to me is that my family refers to my warhammer as "the little men" or "the soldiers". So when i go to warhammer night, and my parents ask me where I'm going, I tell them its warhammer night and they automatically go "oh, your soldiers?"

edit : the wierdest reaction I've gotten from a player is something to the effect of "whats the point of collecting chaos if you only play DE?" commenting on the fact my chaos army is a display army. Yeah, because clearly the only thing about warhammer is the game
