Imperial Agent Provocateur

A theory on Vulkan's survival:

The Compliance of Caldera (Unknown Date.M31) - An unusual campaign during the Great Crusade for the Salamanders involved bringing the world of 154-4, known as Ibsen by its inhabitants, into Imperial Compliance. The Salamanders, lead by Vulkan himself, were joined by the Iron Hands and the Death Guard Legions, both lead by their own respective Primarchs. The world was undeveloped, and largely inhospitable to human life, but possessed valuable mineral deposits. However, the Imperial forces faced stiff resistance for control of the planet from the Eldar, who had placed a garrison upon Ibsen. The Eldar forces -- including Seers, Warlocks and other combat psykers -- could not have expected to defeat one Legion of Astartes, let alone three. The mystery deepened when the semi-feral, primitive human tribes inhabiting the planet seemed more sympathetic to the Eldar, or at the very least, not welcoming to their human liberators. The Salamanders and other Imperials defeated the Eldar relatively easily as expected. After the conquest, the Salamanders learned that the Eldar had been defending a network of menhirs which served as psychic nodes and that fed into a giant arch, where the final and most brutal confrontation between the Astartes and the xenos had taken place. The arch itself had been located thanks to a mysterious Remembrancer attached to the Salamanders, with whom Vulkan had had an unsettling conversation before the battle. After the slaughter ended, Vulkan saw the Remembrancer loitering by the arch and then suddenly disappearing. Following him, Vulkan and his elite Pyre Guard descended into the chambers beneath it, through a portal at its base. There they found a crude warding ceremony taking place, conducted by the primitive human tribal priests, who were ready to sacrifice an ancient Dark Eldar witch. Finally, Vulkan realised the truth: the arch was in reality, a Webway portal (though none of the Imperials, including Vulkan, knew this at the time); Vulkan had seen a "gate" like this before, in his Nocturnean youth, when Dark Eldar repeatedly utilised such a portal to raid and pillage the planet. The Eldar had taken control of the portal by defeating their dark cousins, and in the process had freed the indigenous human population of Ibsen from the horrors of Dark Eldar raids; the Eldar had been seen by the humans as liberators. Terrified by the defeat of their liberators at the hands of the Imperium, the natives had sought to sacrifice their Dark Eldar captive to ward off the inevitable return of her race; the mysterious "Remembrancer" who was nowhere to be seen had actually been the Emperor in disguise, who must have had a great interest in the particulars of this mission since he had ordered so many resources committed to it. Vulkan ordered Ibsen and its irredeemably corrupted population cleansed by flame. He renamed the scoured, Nocturne-like Dead World that remained Caldera. The world was now ready to receive new human colonists and to be exploited for the benefit of the Imperium.

Given Vulkan's ability and tendancy to create artifacts, I think it entirely possible that, given his own world's history with the dark eldar, and given this incident, he developed, was given, or otherwise came in to possession of knoweldge regarding aspects of the webway. To speculate further, Vulkan's intended purpose in the mind of the Emporer may well have been the development of devices and technology supplementing his plans for the webway.

Vulkan's sudden disappearance and, in some sources apparent escape (or at the least, no sign of his death- and if Ferrus Manus's fate and Magnus's "fall" are anything to go by, such things tend to be incredibly noticeable) could be explained in the most literal terms. He vanished in to the webway. This would naturally be kept quite secret, even under better circumstances, but would explain quite a bit!

Of course, it is pure speculation, but it would make for a far more interesting story I think. It also explains why Garro didn't need to pick him up quite nicely.

Alas. Some imperials just won't stay dead. Any word on how he survived? Or how he got off of Istvaan?

Didnt you know?
Angron, the lobotomized schitzo that he is offered him a ride home in his personal shuttle.
Of course when he realized his blundering mistake caused by said lobotomization it was already to late.

Those were some Big guns

Those were Leviathans.

True, they are binary. They do have two feelings.
One is "Duuuuuh..."
and the other is "raaaaage!"

maybe he's stuck in with the dark eldar (or was that the Khan?) or maybe he's in the big ice cube with the necrons?

Khan, not Kharn.

And he went looking for them.

A common misconception. In truth the world eaters are a noble band of brothers, fighting for justice and truth throughout the galaxy.
The legion is home to many a philosopher, poet, artist, humanitarian, or benefactor of mankind in general.
One must evaluate the facts, and not simply repeat imperial propaganda.

True. Their greatest philosopher created their greatest philosophical statement. KILL! MAIM! BURN! can still be heard chanted across the Khorne filled battlefields of the 40k universe.

Chain axe sir...

Perhaps they all practice Hamlet in their spare time? But because of all their philosophical and artistic endeavours they misplace their skulls (a must have when reciting hamlet) and go out across the galaxy seeking replacements

I know at least some ork tribes are still actively in the R&D side of things for both normal and chain axes. I shall notify their grots that they may have some colagues in the warp that may be interested in their findings. Personally though I've always perferred "Blood for the blood god. Skulls for the skull throne!"

Sometimes I just want to kill and not bother with the maiming or burning parts of things as that would involve significant investments in time to develop fire technology too that is independent of the sparks that may result of axe v flint + combustable material side effects of the current axe R&D programs. I blame the Tzeentchenian budget cuts. Have you seen the price of promethium here in the warp? It's getting to the point where we might have to start burning sacrifices just for the body fat to use as fuel and that's simply a waste of good old human blood when that obviously belongs to the blood god. Don't you agree?

True, but there's always the option of using your voice to set stuff on fire if you're willing to share a budget with Luciustech.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

I thought that firm was deep into sonic armor as well as flesh whip design? Whey did they cross over into the fire breath side of things? I might have to dump that stock now as I am fairly sure the Tzeentch Flamers Company woud file some intellectual property suit. I'm fairly confident the law suit would fail but that would just let me rebuy the company on the rebound due to market instability and speculation.

It's part of the sonic armoury initiative. Altering the frequencies at a high rate results in molecules rubbing against each other, setting the target alight from the inside. The project got relegated to 'in development' once they realised that the flames didn't change colour enough.

I remember posting a thread about the same thing a few months ago. From what I have managed to find out is Vulcan survived the DSM and eventually returned home after making a report to the Emperor, just as Corax did. Upon returning to Nocturne to tend to the remnants of his stricken legion. One night it was reported by members of his legion that he had vanished in the night and would return for the final battle, or after the legion had found all of the unique artifacts that he had left behind. I'm afraid that's all I really know as there isn't enough information around :-s

"You strive for victory. That is obvious. What may be less obvious is the nature of victory. There are circumstances in which you can destroy the enemy utterly, without loss to your own forces, and yet the victory may be his. In all situations, you must first decide on the nature of victory, and then take steps to secure it. Avoid the instinct of fight first and think later." ( Leman Russ )

Abit late to the party I'm afraid, but I read somewhere that after being knocked out by a missile to the face, the last remaining Salamanders dragged him onto a Thunderhawk and out of the battle with the rest of the Legion. I may be wrong though, can't quite remember where I read it.

I find it hard to believe Vulkan died during the DSM due to all the things he left behind. I also though I read somewere that after the Salamanders complete all the riddles and puzzles Vulkan left behind as well as collect all his artefacts he will return. Or is this just the hopeful speculation of the Salamanders. If not I guess well just have to wait for the Salamanders to hurry it up and get Vulkan to return so he can call back the other Primarchs and together they can revive Guilamann and restore a large majority of the IoM. But thats just hopeful speculation
