You need to look a little deeper then.
Compared to standerd Chaos Space Marines, they cost 8 points more, can't take any special weaponry, have to take a minimum 70 point sorcerer (although i'm sure many are tempted to give him Bolt for an extra 20 points), they are slow and purposeful, which is nice at times, AP3 means nothing against anything other than MEQ, 4++ while being a nice addition, isn't that useful with the amount of cover and the fact standard weaponry will be the main damage they will take and they fall over to that as easily as CSMs, they only get one attack in CC compared to the two CSMs (and Plagues, and Noise and Chosen and Havocs get, and Zerkers get three).

Thousand Sons aren't as terrible as some people would have you think, but there uses, especially because of their extra point cost are very limited.
