My only bit i would chip in is to try and keep your heavy supports cheap. main mistake i see new guards making is taking really expensive heavys, and putting the troop or fast attack as secondary. those are in fact your most cost effective options, hydras and griffons are cheap, effective and easy to convert from a chimera chassis. same with the manticore.

I agree with the "blobs are fun" part, but not with the rest. A chimera gunline is no more viable against a skilled opponent than a foot list is. Both have their weaknesses, and a foot list is certainly a little harder to play than a parking lot, but that's a weakness in the player, not a weakness in the list itself.
