It was my thought that you could fire ordinance and defensive weapons on the same turn.

Still, if they get assaulted, they are usually doomed. 1 attack each at WS4 S4, even with preferred enemy? Not good enough to justify its points cost.
Fluff-wise, Destroyers should have BS5 though...but that is not our topic.

I'm afraid your thought was wrong. Ordnance rules state "Not even defensive weapons!".
There are exceptions though (Lumbering Behemoth for LRBT for example).
