pretre wrote:When the LOTR movies were coming out, GW released pictures of previously unknown parts of the movie by showing miniatures of them in previews (I believe it was the uruk torchbearer/bomb boy.) before the movies were in theatres. This was not seen as a good move by New Line. Hence, with the Hobbit they have been asked to keep a tight lid on things. Part of their good faith effort was to show that they could keep a lid on their own productions to show that they would be able to do the same for New Line's. They did this by instituting this 2 week policy that they have been under for a while now.

Now you know.

Didn't know they have Necrons in the new Hobbit movie.
BTW the infamous play-dead-marketing has been in place for years. Remember when one frigging day before preorder, Games Day Germany wasn't allowed to confirm Space Hulk and thousands of potential customers and word-of-mouth-spreaders left disappointed? Good thing GW produced only a fraction of the boxes they could have sold with standard marketing.

Didn't they just go "Check your inbox hur hur hur" or something along those lines? Where as everyone had known from around February.

For example, an early leak (I think it was a leak, I might be remembering wrong) from White Dwarf blew the reveal of Haldir and the Elves fighting at Helms Deep, which most certainly did not happen in the book and was meant to be a huge reveal for first time viewers.

This is the sort of thing New Line wants clamped down.

Haldir and the Elves at Helm's Deep, the way they chose to do the Army of the Dead, the Uruk-Hai Berserkers were all things which accidentally got spoiled because of early postings from the main rulebooks.

Heck, I think even the Balrog did too but am not entirely sure.

Did that really 'spoil' anything though? I can guarantee you that only 0.0000002% of the 12 billion people who saw those films (the Earth's population twice) went in with smug smiles on their faces and the knowledge that the army of the dead was fancy day-glow CGI rather than a bunch of extras with bed-sheets over their heads with holes cut out for eyes.

The chap at Gamesday last year said that the secrecy policy could potentially be reversed if it was deemed to be unpopular or ineffective - I can understand New Line perhaps being uppity about fans finding out that the Hobbit is going to feature a dragon with the voice of Sean Connery, but surely that shouldn't effect WFB/40k? New releases these days just flop into shops almost like it is just happenstance, with absolutely zero attempt to create some hype and get fan's mouths watering, a really wasted opportunity IMO and something that must surely cause nightmares for any Independent gaming stores.

Of course we knew that the Army of the Dead was going to be CGI, but it was the design aesthetics--and the role that they played in the movie as well-- that were what New Line was keeping under wraps.

I'm not sure why you focused in on the Army of the Dead as a "spoiler" though. The Uruk-Hai Berserkers at Helm's Deep and Haldir's Elves were far bigger spoilers.

Yes, it spoiled things because some of those elements that were mentioned didn't exist in the books so no one knew they were going to be in the movies.

You're missing the point. GW had to prove to New Line that they can be secretive with their own product before New Line trusts them with their own stuff.

OK I get you, although it doesn't explain the comment that the chap made at Games Day last year (unless he was referring to the secrecy policy being revoked after the release of the movie?)

More likely, he was referring to them potentially revoking it after New Line feels that GW has "proved" itself or something of that nature.
