I think the apology was the right thing to do, don't get me wrong, but it would have been better to have simultaneous delivered the apology and announced five to a dozen firings related to it. It really doesn't matter if it was malice or incompetence, it was a major blunder that hurt their brand very publicly and they should own up to it. That means the 2012 equivalent of public beheadings (fired publicly with no parachute). The counterpart to integrity is accepting consequence.
If news personnel were fired for lying, there would be no one in the news business.

At least no serious wounds that would indicate your head was "bashes" into concrete if you were fighting for your life. What did Martin do, lightly slap you with his glove?"
Corrected your typo.
Corrected your typo.
So, is there a standard measurement for how big a cut you have to have on your head to justify defending yourself? Check out the enhanced footage, he's got quite a bit more than I'd put up with.
Also, it's not like he could SEE the damage and say "ah that's just a scratch, you sweet little Skittle eating gangsta, Off ya go then!" . Since head wounds bleed so badly anyway, a wound half the size of the one he sustained would provide enough blood to fear for your life. Especially if it felt like fighting back was the only way it wasn't getting worse.
Looks like NBC got caught trying to make the case worse than it appears. This is why I don't watch the news. It makes uninformed idiots wave signs around whilst wearing hoodies.
Looks like Flatscreen prices will plummet in the next six months. At least in FLA.

The biggest issue I have is we will never know the kids side of things....
I honestly think the situation was:
1) Zimmerman got "suspicious" and started following Martin.
2) Martin noticed Zimmerman following him and felt "threatened".
3) Martin turned to confront Zimmerman, which resulted in Zimmerman feeling "threatened".
4) Zimmerman drew his gun to "Stand his ground".
5) Martin saw the gun and also "Stood his ground"....
Since we have neither Martin's version of events, nor any other information that effectively counters Zimmerman's version....
I don't see them prosecuting.

He'll most likely be promoted.

So the grand Jury will not look into it, as of right now.
If the FL Police have enough evidence they will arrest him and book him with something.
Given the witness testimony that was reported, it does sound like a case of Self Defense but there are so many conflicting stories it is really tough to tell at this point..
