A lot of the people that pay a lot for a computer are gamers so they can run graphic intensive games. They tend to buy PCs because they can play more games.

So why pay more for a computer that does less? Just because you don't play games why would you pay so much more for a computer that does less. You are being sold less for a higher price. YOU ARE BEING RIPPED OFF!!!

It does more other stuff though. Macs come preloaded with a whole bunch of "lifestyle" and programming tools, for example. The hardware is better integrated and installations and setups are easier.

For people who care about it, there is also an element of appreciating the box design.

I would happily set up an iMac in my sitting room, where I would not show a PC, because an iMac looks like a modern TV and a PC is a beige box.

The fact that Macs sell very well can be interpreted in two ways.

1. People who buy Macs are stupid idiots.

Or

2. People who buy Macs see a value in them that you do not.

The fact that you do not see the value does not mean that option 1 is correct.

I'm not trying to say their choice suck or to be "stop liking what I don't like" guy. It's just when a brand have a cult like fan base who argue their over-glorified and over-priced toys are better because according to them plugging a webcam is same as working in CERN, then they deserve to be ridiculed.

Yeah well, you gotta really work for those!
I spent all my money on tha MAC, how would I afford all thos imaginary cookies?!?

No. You just compared a workstation to a gaming comp. The mac uses registered ECC RAM which is not for gaming. It's a more reliable, but slower memory.

TLR, means that it functions more like a server than a home computer.

Actual comparisons of a workstation to a Mac Pro are a lot more favorable and chances are, you are not the target of these machines. This is for graphics, laboratory and high end work, not for playing a game.

TLR, gaming nerds don't understand what a computer does outside of playing games.

I've never claimed it was about games, let me clarify: I'm a mechanical engineer and I'm yet to see an engineer prefer a mac to a pc.

Come, now. The "PC is a beige box" is a meme that is a decade out of date, as well. There are plenty of AIO PC's that have identical aesthetics as the iMac.

Maybe so but Apple got there first and if you bought a first generation iMac you'll have heritage software and content, and you're happy with the OS and stuff, so why not continue with Macs?

Unless you want to play PC games, of course.

Yeah, sure, but now we're kinda moving the goalposts from "Macs look better" to "Well, if you've used one for years, you're already in their ecosystem....".

In any event, it's kind of a moot point. I can't imagine one of the hundreds of billions of threads like this swayed anyone, ever into changing their minds. As someone who moves between platforms I don't get the zealotry that accompanies these camps that support various megacorps but it's there and that's that.

This discussion reminds me of

Seriously though, despite it all, Apple has done a really good job at marketting itsself and making a LOT of money.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-14340470

And ironically enough, they have successfully marketted themselves to people who HATE corporations with a lot of money. See your local hippy, protester/revolutionary for details.
