Japan already owns 1/3 of the US. if anything the west will become lapdogs for japan, or japan will foreclose on the US taking over hawaii, florida, and california.

Japan and America are best buddies, which is amazing after the Tokyo Fire Raids, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. America should be grateful it has such a tolerant neighbor in Asia. (Dodges anti-anime fan spray).
If I were Japanese I would want America and its people dead.
But I'm not, so I don't.

Some of the older Japs still hold a grudge, but not to many. But its easier to be tolerant when you leave a marine division, a air force base, and a fleet of ships in your back yard

I can be quite hateful when I get angry. Not all the time, just when I'm angry. Just like Nurgle.
However, that wasn't my point. My point was that it's amazing that the majority of Japanese don't hate America after they incinerated over 200000 of their people. That was all I meant.

I'm more amazed that the animosity lives on. I mean, how can you hate someone who didn't do anything to you? I realize that the affects of the atomic bombings, at least culturally, continue to this day. But I think many, maybe most American people don't buy the line that "it was necessary to spare many more lives" as a good excuse or even a complete explanation. I doubt that grudge-holding Japanese have a clear consciences themselves, however. The argument that "their" atrocities are worse than "ours" (I mean, what atrocities?) is a shameful circus indeed.

Unintentionally?!? If you choose to believe the excruciating propaganda vomited forth by those Western capitalist pigdogs unfit for human consumption! The rocket was exploded intentionally by the enormous mental powers of our Great Successor! Desiring to teach our wormlike enemies about our colossal nation's true and enveloping power, he focused his burly will and commanded it to explode! You capitalist shoe slime should be more discouraged than ever before!
nomsheep wrote:Most people who hae legit reason to bear a grudge are at the very least in their seventies.
Even then, seems stupid. There are some old folks in China who could just as legitimately (which is to say with no legitimacy) hold a grudge against them. Apparently, many Japanese young and old refuse to believe that what those Chinese are upset about ever happened, which is a good reason for younger Chinese people to be upset by them. I could see Japanese of any age being upset at Americans who go around saying that dropping the bombs was a good thing in the same way.

The West gets the last laugh for the immense culture rape. The US successfully turned the above into this:
To add my two pence; it is rather disgusting that Japanese textbooks don't discuss the atrocities in China... they rival the holocaust. If the Israeli lobby is so powerful in the West, I see no reason why a Chinese equivalent shouldn't be equally vocal in the East.
I think that two Officers having a competition (which was even reported in Newspapers) to see who could be the first to behead one hundred peasants rivals the atrocities in the West in terms of its sheer disregard for the quality of Chinese life.

Didn't more Chinese die, too?
I suppose it wasn't exactly 'industrial extermination' like the Death Camps were, but I am kind of betraying a personal stance here when I say that I don't understand why the Chinese don't deserve the same level of prominence: AKA a place in the school curriculums next to the Holocaust.
And yeah, prolly doesn't count as Godwin's Law...
Edit: Wiki gives the figures of 7-16 million dead, though it doesn't specify if this is WW2 only or including the war with Japan beforehand.
The fact that it was acceptable to deny the Nanking massacre even took place in Japan just goes to show how the country has never come to terms with the war and its atrocities. I think the US was satisfied once they were able to render the Japanese into the lovable pacifistic guys they are today. They don't believe war is a legitimate tool anymore, but that's the only lesson they learned (and arguably the only one they needed to)

I thought the "Israel lobby" thing was a bit strange. I'm all for Japanese acknowledging the more heinous aspects of their involvement in WWII just like I think Americans need to remember (and first and foremost not deny) internment camps, firebombings, the Nagasaki bombings, etc.

Sorry, ever since I came upon Mearsheimer and Walt as compulsory reading for a Foreign Policy module, I've thrown around the Israel Lobby in conversations where I probably should have kept my mouth shut

Maybe because they are grateful the Allies didn't incinerate 20,000,000 of their people for starting the war?

I think Japan should be able to have a proper army if it wants because it may very well need it. I don't know whether the US or others would balk at the idea or not.

Indeed.
On a side note, there is a surprising amount of evidence to suggest that the Nanking massacre never actually happened (many photos from the supposed massacre have been shown to be fakes) but that's a story for another thread...

Seeing as how the US sells them arms and is working on deals for fighters, and conducts combined military exercises with them, I kind of doubt the US worries about them having an army at this point....
Heck, I used to get a brigades worth of thier defense force guys for training at MacGregor Range for a month a year when I was at Ft Bliss.
