Tzeentch would probably be the best, since he'd have engineered the outcome even if he lost, and in such a way that he got whatever it was he wanted from the game anyway.

Arguing with some people is like playing chess with a pigeon. You can play the best chess in the world, but at the end of the day the pigeon will still knock all the pieces off the board and then gak all over it.

This puts several aspects of the final confrontation in a new light. For example, the Emperor knew Sanguinius was going to die, but accepted his sacrifice as necessary to create that chink in Horus' armor. And the popular sentiment that the Emperor didn't just destroy Horus outright from the start because he still held affection for his errant son can now be dismissed as propaganda. So it took all he had to finally take advantage of that vulnerability and finish off Horus. This is not only a testament to just how powerful Horus had become, but also illustrates what a cold-hearted bastard good ol' Empy really was.

Two points:

1. WHY DO I KEEP OPENING SPOILERS!!!!!!!!! Now you made me buy the book!!!

2. That totally made me see the emperor in a different way, note the that I always thought that he wasn't very smart, some of the decisions he makes make you go WTF, but now he definitely is a bastard.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.

Khorne would kick Khaine's any time. Khaine couldn't even beat Slaanesh, while Khorne humiliates and uses Slaanesh as a punching bag on a regular basis. The three elder Powers treat Slaanesh as an outsider most of the time (considering the three were originally formed from Mankind's darkness this isn't really surprising as Slaanesh is an Eldar deity), and treat him/her/it accordingly.

In open battle, definitely. But maybe not at chess? I dunno, I always saw Khorne as more of a slaughter-beast character, where Khaine relied much more on strategy.

Good point. But I do think Khorne would appreciate a good strategy/tactic, especially if it ended in a bloodbath. Although, the longest chess game would probably between Tzeentch and Cegorach, or one or the other against either the Emperor or the Deceiver (Mephet'ran?).

So am I the only one that now wants a chess board with 40k miniatures or perhaps figures made exactly for it something like the Emperor for a king, guardsmen for pawns (poor guardsmen, much respect to these guys) and so on? I know its redundant having the table top game but come on, wont it be awesome?

The problem with Tzeench in chess is that you never know if he's even playing to win!

Actually, it's both. He plays to win and lose at the same time. Or if you think he's playing to win, he's actually playing to lose, and vice-versa, and so on, and so on...

There's a mistaken impression going around that Tzeentch is some kind of master strategist with plans within plans.

This is patently untrue. In fact, it is so outside what powers him that he can't even understand it. Tzeetch only wants change. He has no grand plan. A plan implies an end. An end will end Tzeentch; he doesn't exist without change.

Tzeentch's only "plan" is to keep throwing gak on the fire and seeing what happens.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

Tzeentch's plan is that he keeps changing it.

For him, the means are an end.

He does have a plan(why do you think there are tons of references to the Grand Scheme?) but its a never ending self-perptuating plan.

Yeah but it won't be as cool, besides i have not seen minis made of glass, marble or wood, and chess pieces made of plastic aren't worthy of being a part the 40k chess set.

Weigh them down with a nice resin base —potentially magnetize the board?— and you'll be golden. This would certainly make an amazing gift if you took the time to make it well. Or fetch you a helluva price on ebay!

I think Dante should get some recognition here. When two space marine chapter masters (space marines are not known for their humility) turn overall command of a theater of operations to you, you must be pretty savvy. Also, didn't Dante go toe to toe with a necron lord and fight him to a draw until some tyrinids showed up?

It's a tradition of Space Marines when marines from different chapters and the same rank are together, whomever has been that rank longer is higher in command.

Dante is the oldest living Chapter Master.

The way it's spun in Codex: Blood Angels is that the smurph and salamander chapter masters give Dante command out of regard for his tactical genius. Obviously each codex spotlights it's own faction.

It does make sense, however, that an older commander would be more tactically experienced.
