Not sure about Hodgson really.
He didn't do well an Anfield, although I do think he should have been given longer, at least until the end of the season.
... he does have a fair bit of international experience and he has a decent level at club football -- but only really with regards to scraping through qualification or maintaining a clubs league status but never really challenging for anything in a serious manner. And I'm not sure these are traits we need in the national manager.
I also not the deafening silence from established international players which doesn't bode well. When the Redknapp rumours started up Twiitter et al wwas buzzing with tributes and wishes that this happens. Now.... not a peep.

Yeah, Hodgson wouldn't have been my first choice. I would have liked to see them let Pearce have a crack at the Euros, then re-evalute afterwards.

Agreed, Pearce has done wonders with the under 21's. He seems to have an innate ability to command respect and control players.
I have to be honest, I liked Fabbio Capello's discipline drive. The way he made the team eat together, dress the same, cut out the Wags etc and forced the team to gel.
It's the old routine of
Forming/Storming/Norming/performing
But it works, the Welsh Grand Slam Rugby team was built upon young blood and it's long gruelling training periods in isolation in Poland. Their fitness was incredible.

Indeed.
In fact one wonders if there's actually a need for a full time England Manager at all really..? I can't quite see how it would be impossible to combine managing a regular league club and running the national squad. There might be potential clashes of interest a'twixt club and country at times one supposes.
Redknapp was " the people's choice" but... hmm...
... I mentioned it in the DCM board a wee while back, but the tax court case did leave me .. well... stunned really. Frankly the last time I saw someone so obviously guilty walk free was in that last episode of "Sherlock" and I don't think Redknapp is quite as sharp as Moriaty.

and when capello went he went on principle.
And i do like psychos honesty when asked out how Brian Clough would of said when Psycho became first team coach.
In all honesty (partially due to the BBC) The rest of the UK sees all the hype each time England go to a championship and then crumble, much to our delight. Sorry england, thats life

Perhaps if the rest of the home nations actually ever qualify then they'll be "hyped up" as well.
And it's not just the BBC or "The English" who do this.
England are currently placed as fourth favourites to win Euro 2012, ahead of fellow group members France, ahead of 2006 World Cup winners Italy and ahead of the Ronaldo-reliant Portugal.
But I don't know anyone who claims we'll actually storm through and win it. But it's not impossible. We've shown we can play against and beat the top sides and.. well... did anyone think Greece were going to do what they did ?

Cannot blame them, the amount the FA have hemorrhaged on Sven and Fabbio is a National scandal.
£50 million between the pair of them, both supposedly good, both in reality average. It's a poison chalice to be sure, however it should be a source of national Pride, a matter of honour to be asked to represent your country at the highest level. To have your pick of the best players and to make teams of such quality that a Club would drool at. The FA like the MCC has a lot to answer for.

Because i'm fine with the ranting...
I didn't say people thought England would win.
Just that people get excited.
Though there is a guy down the street from me who constantly think England is gonna win...
No you don't need to find anyone mate, I just like ranting.
Thats the point though, the average Englishman thinks England are half decent. Nobody thinks they match Brazil or Spain, even Albatross who is clearly a big England fan, wouldnt say "Im sure we will thrash spain" if England meet them in the WC, he would say "we have a chance" and what the feth is wrong with saying that!? Do the Welsh and Scots not say the same thing when they play England?
That's football, you can always win. But 90% of England fans say exactly that "We have a chance" not "we will probably smash Brazil" you guys are just making this gak up because it gives you some ammo for your mockery gun, but nobody actually says it!
English fans quite rightly think England are merely half decent, and with some luck they can beat better teams. This is not incorrect.
Being a Middlesbrough fan, I don't give a gak about England, none of them play for the Boro, and considering I boo Wayne Rooney and John Terry or whoever else is running towards the Boro goal, I find it hard to switch that emotion off and start cheering for them.
The only time I ever cheer for England is when they are playing against Wales or Scotland, because I truly loathe my neighbours.

But we do, when we go up against Argentina/Brazil/German/France we always kid ourselves. Yeah, we've got a good chance we've got player "X". Then someone does something silly like lash out and get red carded, and misses the next game, or reduces the team in the Quarters to 10 men. It's the lack of discipline that annoys me. The cool and collected German side always defeats us because they keep such good discipline, whereas our's goes up in smoke at about 65minutes. Steve gerrard is a great player, but has suffered so many injuries because he's plays at 100% commits to even the most marginal tackle, he then picks up injuries. A bit more discipline, knowing when to hold and when to fold, when to commit and when not too and he wouldn't be injured half as much.

That is one problem that England needs to work on. Depending on who is playing you guys end up with 11 footballers on the pitch instead of one team.

He did quite well for Switzerland, with a win percentage of roughly 51% (21 victories) with the remainder split evenly between draws and losses (ten each). Also he took Fulham to a Europa League final.
There's plenty of talent in the England squad, the challenge for Roy is to get them bonded as a team and playing to their strengths; I wouldn't bet against another implosion though, and it's hard to see past Spain as champs in this particular era.

Exactly, the German youth system has been engineered for them to play as a team together, the England team has no synergy as each player at the club level is the star (Lampard, Rooney, Gerrard)

Honestly though, I just think that English players get so much smoke blown up their arse they think they are far better than they actually are. I reckon Gerrard is the ONLY player who I would put in a world 11.
Rooney is merely decent, there are 10 better strikers than him, but the English media make him out to be amazing.
Same goes for Lampard, Terry, all the big stars.
Not great, merely decent with an overblown opinion of themselves.

One day we'll look back at Sven's time in charge and say that was a golden age.
En gland ain't that bad, but they're not as bad as people on this thread make them out to be.
TBO, all the talk of England is made redundant by Germany and Spain. Still, I'll be starting a euro2012 thread nearer the time, so more opportunity for people to gnash their teeth.
