The humbrol version has a metal thread so it can't wear away, but the GW one is plastic so you can damage the threads. The leaking is probably because it wasn't on tight enough, that's why mine leaked.
I've found some compressors/airbrushes on eBay, I've not got them yet, but it's £48 for an airbrush, compressor and the tubing to connect them. The brush I'm looking at does fine lines up til an inch and a half coverage, so it sounds like you can paint small minis
Also, with the GW airbrush, how are you using it? If you're pressing the button down constantly, instead of in little bursts, you're going to make the cans cool down a lot quicker, and then you'll lose pressure.
It just leaked from the instant that I put the cap on, no matter how hard I tried to tighten it (whilst being mindful of its potential limitations too). I had it off a couple of times to check that I'd got it on correctly but that made no difference. And yeah, I'm using 2-3 second bursts, not going trigger happy with it.
That compressor and airbrush deal you found sounds great, maybe too great! I'm being mindful of spending too little on these now lol!
I'll send you a PM with the listings

Its not great even when it works, but at that price range your not going to get much better.
Yeah, it is a $30 spray gun. It isn't meant to be awesome.
But $30 airbrushes can be awesome no? 0.o
I got mine for $10 from China. You can see results in my gallery.
I also buy my brushes for ~$3 from the local craft store.

If you want budget airbrushes in the UK I always recommend RGB Tools. I bought a 2 brush kit with a tanked compressor 2 years ago and have never had cause to regret it.
http://www.rdgtools.co.uk/acatalog/AIRBRUSH_KITS_AND_SPARES.html
It's the same kit eve oat of he budget kits you see but cheaper, their are other cheaper options on the site as well if accoustics and quality are of less importance too (ie nail spraying kits). RGB have the added bonus of being a well known hobby company not an eBay outfit so Distance selling rules apply!

Airbrush suggestions?
I bought mine on E-Bay for $2 and it works like a charm.
I believe it is an Aerograph...
Just do a good search on E-Bay. There are some good deals on there.

It was seemingly designed to look more like a toy gun than functional tool so I'm not surprised it's not up to all that.

I use mine quite regularly, it's fantastic if you're just undercoating/basecoating or spraying large surfaces, like tanks/scenery. Anything else and it isn't worth bothering with, being honest. I'd definitely get a more versatile one if you wanna do anything else

You can get decent airbrushes for $30.
It will probably only be a basic siphon feed and single action, but it will work better than the GW handflamer (there's a reason you can't spell it without 'LAME' ) one.
This doesn't include the compressor, of course. Expect to spend anywhere from $50 up to several hundred for a good one.
Ironically, Badger had the same issues with one of their basic siphon feed (the type of airbrush that GW's one is built around) 30-odd years ago.

Have been using the spray gun for over a year now and have not had any problems, but I invested in a compressor right away. I knew that compressed air cans are a waste of time an money. If you got condensate/frosting on the can, that means you were discharging at a fairly fast rate. Never experienced that on a spray can unless I was discharging the entire can in a few minutes. Were you adjusting the spray flow and testing it out before spraying the figures? No airbrush or spray gun is a open and use tool, it takes some practice. You shouldn't give up on the first try.
The spray gun is a great brute force tool and works great for base coats and priming, but not much else. Cleans real easy and don't need to be careful with parts when cleaning. Can't do that with an air brush. Friends warned me away from the Badger air brushes because they found it was way too easy to bend the internal spray needle. Replacing that is almost as much as a new gun.

I dunno, maybe I just got one of the bad ones.
As for the can, I tried everything to get it to stop leaking, from trying to ensure a tighter fit on the cap to adjusting the amount of air flow, though nothing helped to alleviate the problem.
Yeah I'm new to spray guns and airbrushes and all that, though I'm pretty damn sure that I can tell the difference between working and not lol
Wrote to GW about it, they've given me a free returns address and I can just send them a list of things that I'll take in its place or will give me a refund.
Personally... I'm thinking of sending a piss taker of a shopping list and see how much of it they send lol

There is a Paasche spray gun type deal you can get from a hobby lobby for about twenty dollars, which is a better alternative, but honestly I would say to make sure that you connect the spray gun to the propellant can very securely, even if you have to use silicon tape to get the can to seal properly. The can seal failing comes entirely from the piece not sealing on the screw controlling the pressure. Personally I hate propellant cans, especially since they start freezing after a period of time, lowering the pressure you actively have for use, so I would still end up hooking a compressor up to the spray gun because of that inconsistency with the propellant.
Yes, good airbrushes do not come cheap, but when you do take the plunge take a few things into consideration, the trigger action, the paint feed, parts prices and availability, and how many rubber seals you have within the airgun, I myself have own 5 airbrushes, two Iwata, and three Badgers. Compressors are going to be expensive, unless you buy used. It is possible to get everything to start airbrushing at around three hundred USD, and I have to say its worth it, especially if you like to assembly line paint miniatures.
My personal preferences.
Paasche spray gun link.
Patriot 105 - Badger Airbrush
Badger Compressor I have the first one on the page.
If you take the plunge into this piece of hardware make sure you get the right hoses and take your time and practice with them to learn them.

The old adage 'you get what you pay for'.
I guess it's nice that a few hobbyists who only buy GW stuff will have another tool on their belt. The downside being this being GW the mark-up is such that it was probably made for about 1$.
