I've kinda cut corners in some areas and got units cheaper by doing so.
i got 3 battle tanks from a freind for $40 once.
With nothign but spare bitz and plasticard i've build entire tanks and artillery pieces.
scratch built a Basilisk, Leman Russ and several others.
Cheapest build (thats feasable for say a tourney) is a Rhino Turned Demolisher tank. It had a M4 sherman turret glued to the top which i fixed so it could spin amoung other modifications from plasticard and green stuff i already had.
Rhino purchase itself was $5 with an additional $5 for an earth shaker and a bunch more bitz.
Super heavys i've built from Kitbashing has worked out well too.
a Maus (German ww2 Super heavy tank) at /135th scale fits a Baneblade easy size wise and with some bitz added sponsons and the front weapons (demolisher cannon and Heavy bolters) i got 2 of them for $60 online ($30 per tank)
a second an E-100 (another WW2 super heavy design) for 55$ again with fitting 40k bitz i already had on hand.
Even a Macharius tank (a Forge world SUper heavy just under a baneblade in size) i built from an M60 kit for $35. with an additional $3 (approx) for the plasticard tubes for the cannon barrels.
As for Soldiers i started with a few (reletivly) that i bought myself then bought a large number in bulk from someone who was changing over to Fantasy (earning large numbers of metal cadian special weapons like plasma and metlas, a metal command squad, and numerous HWT and individual Troopers) for about less then half of what the thing would cost off the shelf. they are not all painted or are in different stages of paint and have simple not gotten aroudn to copmpleting them.
