Meh, Frazzled care not.
I have just listened to that man lying on the floor, calling to his dad. He suffered from a mental illness and was homeless on the street. Whether or not this mentally ill homeless person was trying to break into a car to steal a radio or just ranting, he most certainly did not deserve to be beaten to a bloody corpse by the people who we pay money to 'protect and serve'. The entire thing is horrific and brutal and sadistic. 6 men beat a mentally ill man to death. They were not 'fighting crime', they were murdering a vulnerable member of the society they are supposed to be policing.
Frazzled, your comment is repulsive.
You have repeatedly claimed to be a Christian.
Christ would have advocated caring for the man, forgiving any sins and helping him. Go reread your Bible. Christ walked with the homeless, the lepers, the unloved and the poorest of society, he worked with them and helped to life them up. Your attitude is the antithesis of this. Your casual comments about this murder are mind-blowing.
It's about time.

Agreed. There are appropriate uses of force, and that use stops when the subject complies regardless. Anything else is a crime.

Unfortunately police brutality is as old as the hills and its only the prevalence of cameras that is bringing so many cases to light these days. I still think the vast majority are good people with an honest intention to make the world a bit safer, but there is a minority of bullies with serious inferiority issues that are borderline sociopaths. I think the selection process for all police should be much more rigorous and include extensive psychological evaluation to weed out such disgusting people. The London riots were directly caused by police brutality, and the social cost, from lost trust, of the actions of this fraction of the forces over the years is untold.
The actions of these men (if they can be called that) are abhorrent, they deserve to spend a very long time in prison, where they will have a wonderful time i'm sure, especially as they won't have a badge and a gun to hide behind and make them feel all superior.

Obviously hindsight is 20/20, but from looking at the video, it seemed like the first officer was escalating the situation needlessly. It's also pretty lame that multiple officers were unable to subdue the guy when he was already on the ground and being tazed. It definitely seems appropriate that these officers are being charged. I'm guessing it's the first two in the video, and not the ones who arrived later. Does anybody know for sure?
And LumenPraebo and fire4effekt....What are you guys doing? Just quoting someone else's post and not writing a message isn't contributing. If you can't form your own thought on the subject, stop spamming the thread with stupid quotes with no message. This isn't 4chan. It's even more spammy than an image macro, at least then there's the off-chance that the picture is worth a chuckle.

Can we have the officers involved put before a firing squad? After receiving a beating close to what they gave this guy. Or better yet, beaten almost to the same degree, given time to heal, then repeat the process over and over again. A decade's time should be sufficient for them to learn their lesson. Christ would normally say 'turn the other cheek' or 'love your fellow man'-but I like to think he'd sit this one out.

I could get behind Their punishment being Severe beatings from 5-7 people, provided that Medical Staff was Nearby to start treatment on them asap.
They can't learn their lesson if they die.

Hence a decade of beatings, while keeping them on the line. I don't take kindly to pricks like these, and I agree-death isn't a lesson-it'll only hurt others.

Guarantee they, and anyone else in their position, won't ever make this mistake again. They beat a mentally handicapped man to death-some earlier civilizations believed in "an eye for an eye." I'm thinking they had the right idea in certain regards.
And it won't make things right for the homeless guy who died, nothing will, but it'll sure as hell make sure these cops don't ever do it again.

It is a very slippery slope when justice becomes revenge, a stay in prison that befits this murder is deterrent and punishment enough, there have been studies into whether the death penalty is a greater deterrent than life imprisonment and it isn't. For the same reason people think they might win the lottery, people don't expect to be caught. And yes earlier cultures did believe in an eye for an eye, should we also replace every number higher than 2 with the concept of 'many'?

Me? My only reaction is a resounding "meh"! What the cops did was a crime, they were arrested and and are probably going to spend a looong time in prison for it... Nothing to get overly excited about anyway.

Police are entrusted with a very heavy duty and obligation, to protect and to serve.
As Spider Man's uncle Ben taught many of us when we were kids, with great power comes great responsibility. While many police will lament their lack of power and the tough situations they are put in on a daily basis, the authority to use violence on citizens is a great and terrible power.
When this power is misused and people are beaten or killed, that's a pretty horrible transgression. A betrayal of one's service oath and the principles one hopes a person is declaring to love if they choose to be a police officer.
It's not a "meh" situation. A weak and vulnerable member of society was beaten to death by some of the people who have sworn and are paid to protect society. That's both a terrible irony and an awful act.

Actually a completely unproductive at best and prejudicial at worst, member of society was beaten to death by some people that have only joined the police force so that they could indulge their power trips at will. Those same people were then arrested and are standing trial for that crime... Seems like the definition of "meh" to me. Honestly I got more riled up by that cop that shot the guys dog for no reason and walked than I did for this piece of news.

You're more upset at a single cop shooting a (potentially aggressive) animal, than a dozen policemen beating a defenceless human being to death, as he screams for mercy?

Like I've said several times, my ability to feel any empathy towards my fellow humans is generally restricted to my immediate family, close friends and children. Everyone else I just honestly don't care about and it really puzzles me that some people genuinely do, even though I firmly believe that most are just feigning to care because its the PC thing to do...
Besides, the cops responsible were arrested and are awaiting trial, what is the big deal? The cop that shot the dog walked away stock free without any repercussion for his actions, AFAIK, that is allot more outrageous then: "people committed crime, people where arrested for that crime".

Whether they've been charged or not doesn't take away from the sickening crime itself. You've just said you feel more empathy for the dog than a human being, even going so far as to call him useless and unproductive. Good day, sir.

Besides, the cops responsible were arrested and are awaiting trial, what is the big deal? The cop that shot the dog walked away stock free without any repercussion for his actions, AFAIK, that is allot more outrageous then: "people committed crime, people where arrested for that crime".
Wow, like I agree with this guy on both counts, even though he is a dern ferenner and probably has no concept of the greatness of queso.

How would he feel about the officers?
Or is that when "eye for an eye" comes into play?

Good point. It's a fine thing that our Criminal Justice System isn't the Criminal Mercy System.

Some people...

You must be a pleasant guy to be around.
Cool, we are now down to the ad hominem attacks phase of the discussion, are we? Its always funny how you "pious" and "compassionate" people are always the first to personally attack those that don't agree with you.
I called him useless and unproductive because all evidence pointed to the fact that he was useless and unproductive! Normal, productive members of society don't usually walk around the streets in the middle of the night damaging others peoples property... Can you say that was I said was harsh? Probably is, but that doesn't make it less true and also doesn't diminish the fact that what those cops did was a crime and they are going to go to jail for it.

If you're talking about Police Brutality starting riots and you are referring to the most recent London riots you have that backwards. The riots spiralled out of control due to the soft handedness of the police. While it is said to have stemmed from the shooting of Mark Duggan, it was really just opportunistic scum baggery. I don't think a vast majority of Londoners felt that there had been a social injustice done that day. The riots threatened to start in other cities because of the perceived weakness of the police.
Social Injustice? Nah blood, i'm doing it for that sweet Basmati...
