Like I've said several times, my ability to feel any empathy towards my fellow humans is generally restricted to my immediate family, close friends and children. Everyone else I just honestly don't care about and it really puzzles me that some people genuinely do, even though I firmly believe that most are just feigning to care because its the PC thing to do...

Besides, the cops responsible were arrested and are awaiting trial, what is the big deal? The cop that shot the dog walked away stock free without any repercussion for his actions, AFAIK, that is allot more outrageous then: "people committed crime, people where arrested for that crime".

Wow, like I agree with this guy on both counts, even though he is a dern ferenner and probably has no concept of the greatness of queso.

Heresy! I bow down to the greatness of queso every day of my life! Just today my lunch was a queso and chorizo omelet and much rejoicing was had by all!

Have you ever taken an AQ test? You might find the results interesting. I'm honestly not trying to get at you, but empathy is kind of imperative for society to work. So no, people aren't just putting it on, empathy toward fellow humans was around a long time before the '80s and the PC movement.

Empathy is a Christian trait. Romans did just fine without empathy.

Seriously, there is a term for those unable to feel empathy for others it's "Psychopath".

Being able to share the emotions of others is a pretty basic function of the human mind. If you're claiming you can't do it, there are exactly two (2) possibilities:

1) You've got a serious mental disorder.
2) You're just trying to sound like a tough guy.

Most studies show that the average human cannot think about another person's needs or issues more than 30 seconds at a time. Try it. Seriously, you can't do it.

Well, now I did... on the internet!

I got a 23 out of 50, so according to the very reputable Newsweek site, I'm slightly above average (average being 11-22).

And I disagree with the notion that empathy is imperative for society to work, a whole bunch of societies since the dawn of man have functioned just fine without those "modern" notions (and many in the modern age still do as well). I also watch examples of lack of empathy for your fellow man every single day, be it the disabled old lady begging in the subway that everyone ignores and almost crushes during rush our, to the guy on the side of the road that has obvious car problems but that no one stops to help, to the girl that is being robbed in a busy street in broad day light without no one lifting a finger to help!

Everyone is only out to help themselves, I'm willing to give that some people really do give a damn for strangers out of the kindness of their hearts, but most people just put it on for show!

I never said that I didn't feel empathy for others, I literally have jumped of a cliff to grab my kid, for instance, I just don't feel empathy for people outside my close relations and I don't believe that most people do as well.

The same Greeks who existing on a slave culture and treated women as property?
I'll give on the Buddhist thing, I'm not as familiar with the others.
However I will note India exists on a caste situation. Empathy is antithetical to that.

23 is nowhere near autistic, borderline is around 30, and I think theres only one test so don't worry about its credibility. Modern cities and consumerism have lead to levels of desensitization that some psychologists think may be contributing to rising levels of mental illness, and indeed its not good to know that someone could drop down dead in the street and people would ignore them.

The Greeks understood empathy, see Plato, Aristotle, Homer and Hesiod. I mean Prometheus didn't steal fire for his own benefit.

They may have understood it. They just didn't follow it.

Like CT (EDIT: my bad like Chongara actually), he claims empathy, and then attacks other posters accusing them of mental disorders. If he was empathetic he would be attempting to help them, not attack them.

OT but 18 on the AQ test.

I absolutely didn't accuse anyone of a mental disorder, I asked if he'd ever taken the test, lack of empathy is a symptom, one of many, most of which you'd never be able to pick up over the internet. It would be incredibly irresponsible to start accusing people of mental disorders that you have never met, it takes two psychologist to diagnose autism spectrum disorders as they can be quite nuanced. It honestly wasn't intended as an attack on a fellow poster.

I for one, can empathise with your desire to seem like a tough guy on the Internet. Let's face it real life doesn't really afford most of us any real chance to feel cool or big on a regular basis. Posturing and acting like you're stone jawed-manly many-man, who "doesn't care 'bout nobody or nothin' but himself and his lady" can give a certain satisfaction that you just don't get out of being another nameless cog into today's world.

Sure, if your understanding of "just fine" is extremely broad, and not at all related to any of the characteristics of any given society except in the sense that it is, in fact, a society.
