I've been gaming 28 years and have a five year old and a one year old.
All the guys in my club are 35+ (apart from one) and all have atleast one and up to four kids.
We play for the spectacle. For us that is painted miniatures on good terrain. Its how we all want to play, none of us like using unpainted stuff so it works fine. We are also lucky to have 8 very committed hobbyists in our club. It is a far more common theme among historical gamers to be fair.
And it's something that is sorely missing outside the historical gaming community. The fact that miniatures-based wargaming seems to have lost its focus on spectacle is something I still struggle with. The attention that players like Big P give to the models and terrain is drawing me back to historical gaming.
I've been gaming for a little bit longer than Big P, and have raised a 19 year old and held down a job as a lawyer. It doesn't mean you have to compromise on what you do with your hobby.

I guess Im lucky as Im either with my family or gaming... I dont do anything else. I paint once the kids are in bed and its grand.
But feel free to carry on throwing around unfounded assumptions, thats what the interenet is for!
Oh please, come off it.
It wasn't a value judgement, simply an explanation of how some gamers (like myself) want to split their time.

I am very happy with FOW, and trying to spread it to as many people as possible. The only down side I have with is that it isn't as popular as 40k (yet). Thus when I go back to college (in Harrisonburg, VA) I have a hard time finding a game to play.

That really depends on what your hobby is. Some people, such as myself, find painting a chore.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

Its just a shame that they couldn't fight off Andy Chambers.

I play both FOW and 40K and will continue to do so. FOW I play Russians and love it. I have just uploaded some gallery images of a few of my painted models.
I do like to play painted models but time is against me. I am a teacher and have 2 kids and wife so finding the time is not easy. I am getting there but it tends to be when the school holidays are on that I can spend a few days painting.
Please have a look at my pics in Flames of war folder in my gallery.
I have a 5000 point and growing Russian force. I love painting the tanks as they are the easiest.
Automatically Appended Next Post: As for the price issue, well its my hobby, I don't drink much and I don't smoke so meh!
I also agree that BF can produce some poor quality models but as someone has said its part of the hobby.

Brother Malleus wrote:my thoughts exactly, I understand time constraints and playing the RL card, it just seems that all the battles I play against where the opponant uses primed mini's are wannabe powergamers. The amount of primed GK's I have faced in recent months is outstanding (Crowe Tax/Draigowing lists bleh) there is only so many times you can play lists like that before getting dis satisfied with the players and to a certain extent the game as well.
Ummm I would say more primed GK armies would be more indicative of the fact that GKs are relatively new and not just an indicator of wannabe power gamers. I have a completely unprimed chaos renegades army...I am certainly not playing them to be a power gamer. Hahahahahahahahahaha.
It is the attitude that someone isn't painting their minis has some negative connotation or negative aspect applied to them by many of the "It MUST be painted" crowd that annoys me. MUST-BE-PAINTED elitists wouldn't be labeled as such if they didn't say anything else, but that they don't like their opponents to play with unpainted minis. Instead it is usual combined with an insult as them being wanabe power gamers or lazy mooks, or some other such insult that implies that they are better because they paint their toy soldiers and someone else doesn't. I have plenty of friends who refuse to play any of their own minis painted, but don't push their painting needs on everyone else they play against either.

So time to build a second army and wrangle people into playing with you.

Yes, I will be happy to play 15mm WW2, but not using Flames of War minis, they are too expensive. I will buy other brands and use FoW rules.

I wouldn't say that I'm happy that I play 15mm WW2 specifically, but more that I'm very happy to have discovered the huge world of historical gaming in general and not feel tied down to GW (or any single miniatures company). There are a ton of options out there for nearly every period you can think of. We have been and are still in a golden age of miniatures gaming (both historical and sci-fi/fantasy), and to me that's a lot more reason to be happy than playing one particular period in one particular scale.
