One thing though, the article mentions that Sony have had this patent for years and are renewing it.
If they've had it for years but haven't used it, what makes you think that they'll start using it now all of a sudden?
Just because they've renewed it doesn't mean that they intend to use it, merely that they own the patent rather than Microsoft or Nintendo.

Because they haven't gotten it to work before? Back then we didn't have things like cloud and the Iphone and crap like that.
Now we do.

Some company somewhere is going to do it eventually anyway. May as well grab the patent and be able to rake in royalties.

My point exactly.
Sony may have the patent for it, but absolutely no intention of using it. They could merely be doing it to discourage other people to do it (kind of unlikely) or to enable themselves to make money off of other companies doing it (Nintendo/Microsoft)
All the talk in this thread of "OMG I'm never going to buy an sony products for the rest of my life ever!!" is ridiculous; the article isn't saying that Sony intend to use it, just that they've renewed the patent.
Swearing off of sony products because of it renewing a patent, no more, no less, is nonsensical.

I'll still buy Sony gaming stuff, but if they make a really dumb decision and try and implement their advert tech, then I will no longer purchase their products.
I don't see a point in all of this anger and declarations of boycotting (about the adverts) when it hasn't happened yet.
Now as far as the Vita goes, I can understand the resentment towards Sony for that.
IMHO, Sony is too expensive to buy from in general. If I ever get a PS3, it will be used, unless I can find a new one for a similar price.
Will I buy TV's or other entertainment equipment from Sony? HELL no. Way too overpriced.

Its important to note that this technology has more reasonable uses. For example, throw in an ad during a loading screen, or for more of the in game board ads we've seen for years in a more dynamic manner. Patenting this technology doesn't mean they'll use it just as its described. There are less annoying applications. The idea itself is absurd, but they may indeed never use it in that form.

It'd only work if it were a universal system, or else one would buy an Xbox or products from other hardware manufacturers.
However, I think this'd be great for F2P Games; aka Planetside 2... Perhaps players could pay to opt-out? Automatically Appended Next Post: SOE are also the ones behind Planetside; maybe it is intended for F2P stuff

Which doesn't indicate taht they don't want to use it. They will probably use it in developing markets first. Like MS's subscription model for Windows.

So Sony is essentially preventing anyone from showing us ads in the middle of a game, and this makes them a bad guy?

Sony do something Noble? They'd have handed out free PS2's for every one that failed, which is a rather large number.

I wouldn't say stopping essentially. Say you make something cool, but I came up with a similar idea earlier. I couldn't be assed producing it, but let a few people know so now that you're producing I get a little money back on the invention.
Honestly I could see this more in appliances like microwaves, fridges, etc first. The best thing to do with marketing is cover as many points of contact as possible, the more your ad is seen the more likely your product sold.

Might just use it for free content, kind of like how youtube makes you watch advertisements on videos or even how dakkadakka has a nifty little ad in the upper right corner of the web page at all times. I doubt they would ever put an ad in the middle of gameplay for anything you actually pay for and even if they do then it would most likely be at the loading screen when you aren't doing much anyway.
Sony itself does drop the ball on a lot of things, but they try hard so I'll give them awhile to fix their issues. Then again buying a first generation console is always a bad idea, so surprise, surprise when the first generation Vita has issues.
I still don't get the 4gb xbox 360 though.

Apple, for one.
US Patent Application 20090265214 (2009) made by Apple:
"Its distinctive feature is a design that doesn’t simply invite a user to pay attention to an ad—it also compels attention. The technology can freeze the device until the user clicks a button or answers a test question to demonstrate that he or she has dutifully noticed the commercial message. Because this technology would be embedded in the innermost core of the device, the ads could appear on the screen at any time, no matter what one is doing.
These tests “can be made progressively more aggressive if the user has failed a previous test,” the application says. One option makes the response box smaller and smaller, requiring more concentration to find and banish. Or the system can require that the user press varying keyboard combinations, the current date, or the name of the advertiser upon command, again demonstrating “the presence of an attentive user.”

I'm shocked, and I mean shocked, at some of the reactions to this news.
It's a patent. It's not real, it's not been implemented anywhere, and there hasn't even been a press release talking about the intent to actually use it.
It's just a patent.
When companies come up with good, novel ideas, they patent them. That doesn't mean anything.
Relax.
