That arrogant worms song is funny.. I saw it years ago on Youtube with a Ren and Stimpy overlay.
Its true though, the war isn't well known in Britain, we have just have had far too many wars to remember them all I suppose, and obviously if feth all changed, then your going to teach stuff in the national curriculum that actually mattered.
When I was at school, we learned about a few hundred, I remember doing WW1 for ages, WW2 for less, plenty of the napoleonic wars, the War of the Roses, plenty about the Yanks v the Indians, but nobody ever mentioned 1812 to me. I think the first I heard of it was when I was in Iraq and a Yank marine told me that the Royal Marines burned the white-house down. Factually incorrect, but it prompted the google search!
Unimportant now because were good pals with our American cousins, I think like all neighbours, its now left down to bickering between the Canadians and the Americans than us lot.
We enjoy talking about malleting the French instead.

Louis XVI simply wants revenge! Seven years war is a big shame to France. for him if France was deprived of Canada, Neither should Thirteen Colonies belong to British crown!
by then Louis XVI doesn't really care whether should he rule that colony in question. all he cares is that Brits lost its grips on any of its colony. no matter how.
About France being 'an original foe' to 'Americans' ... by the time Thirteen colonies were a part of British Empire. Americans fight war on British side (and its allies) because they were either told to do so, or tied with european politics.

List of wars with American involvement and how the British and French were involved (ignoring all those small, yet tragic nonetheless, Indian wars)
American Revolution: French ally, British enemy
Northwest Indian War: French uninvolved, British enemy
Franco-American War: French enemy, British uninvolved
Barbary Wars: French and British uninvolved
War of 1812: French uninvolved, British enemy
Mexican-American War: French and British uninvolved
American Civil War: French and British uninvolved
First Samoan Civil War: French uninvolved, British ally
Second Samoan Civil War: French uninvolved, British ally
Spanish–American War: French and British uninvolved
Philippine War of Independence: French and British uninvolved
Boxer Rebellion: French and British allies
Mexican Revolution: French and British uninvolved
World War I: French and British allies
Russian Civil War: French and British allies
World War II: French and British allies
Korean War: French and British allies
Vietnam War: French and British uninvolved
Persian Gulf War: French and British allies
Bosnian War: French and British allies
Kosovo War: French and British allies
War in Afghanistan: French and British allies
Iraq War: French uninvolved, British ally
Libyan civil war: French and British allies
Of the 24 wars involving America, we've been with the French 11 times and against them 1 time (meaning that when we're both involved, we're on the same side 92% of the time). With the British, we've fought them 3 times and fought with them 13 times (being on the same side 81% of the time).
Clearly Britain is a bigger enemy of the US than France is. Of course, neither of them compares to our real enemies: Germany, Mexico, Spain, Samoa, Native Americans, and pretty much all of Asia.

Clearly Britain is a bigger enemy of the US than France is. Of course, neither of them compares to our real enemies: Germany, Mexico, Spain, Samoa, Native Americans, and pretty much all of Asia.
In this provocative and brilliantly researched history of how the French have dealt with the United States, John J. Miller and Mark Molesky demonstrate that the cherished idea of French friendship has little basis in reality. Despite the myth of the “sister republics,” the French have always been our rivals, and have harmed and obstructed our interests more often than not.
This history of French hostility goes back to 1704, when a group of French and Indians massacred American settlers in Deerfield, Massachusetts. The authors also debunk the myth of French aid during the Revolution: contrary to popular notions, the French did not enter the war until very late and were mainly interested in hurting their rivals, the British. After the war, the French continued to see themselves as major players in the Western hemisphere and shaped their policies to limit the growth and power of the new nation. The notorious XYZ affair, involving French efforts to undermine the government of George Washington, led to an undeclared naval war with France in 1798. During the Civil War, the French supported the Confederacy and installed a puppet emperor in Mexico.

The 'war' when France fought the USA was a part of French revolution. while US was officially neutral. the US also serves as a new home for french nobles fleeing the civil war (and to some extent, Robespierre's 'Reign of Terror'). including a man who.. by then, will become the next King of France. the war however, did not involve with the refugees there. but it's more or less involving with trading. the US was (and maybe .. still) an exporter of many agricultural products. and AFAIK. by the time of the French Revolution. Europe was also beset with food shortage. (and to some extent, agricultural failures of that period due to some natural causes). everyone in europe are willing to buy american grains. and both Coalitions and the Revolutionary French government demands the USA an exclusive rights of grain trade. the USA declines such demand and instead choose to make wealths with both sides. and then a merchant was 'held hostaged' .. well can't really remember but the war itself proves too much to feeble american military of that time. French navy was no less powerful than Brits ones. and the war ends without any territorial changes nor an unfair treaty. p'rhaps thanks to the change of government, from the Directeur to Napoleon Bonarparte (and Napoleon himself seems to favor Americans maintain its rights of trading, while he always want to see Americans fight Brits, with or without affilation with him)

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. did the US get any land in canada? Nope. They failed to achieve any stated objective.
Just because the US didn't get conquered and put back into the British empire doesn't mean it was a draw.

And that Arrogant Worms/ Three Dead Trolls 'War of 1812' song is great.
How is it a draw?
US declares war, objective: take land in what is now canada.
did the US get any land in canada? Nope. They failed to achieve any stated objective.
Just because the US didn't get conquered and put back into the British empire doesn't mean it was a draw.
or in 40k terms, your scenario objective is to occupy the enemies deployment zone. did you do it? no, ergo you lost.
Taking Canada wasn't the US's only or even primary objective, nor was it the main reason they declared war.

Were all buddies now, it wouldn't be appropriate.
I will take my American missus out for a pint in about an hour, that will have to do.
I feel like the obvious sex joke here is obvious.

It's always funny when Americans and British and Canadians all start talking about it. The Canadians think they won because they threw back an American invasion of Canada, the British think they won because they burned Washington D.C. and helped stop the invasion of Canada, and the Americans think they won because they defeated a second British invasion of the US and had some big wins at Baltimore and New Orleans.
This^ Overall it was a draw.

The War of 1812 wasn't a draw. The US won (by fighting off a much bigger opponent, opening up trade with France, ending the impressing of American sailors, ending the threat of Native American attacks, and getting the National Anthem), Canada won (by remaining part of the Empire, and by gaining a national identity), and Britain won (by keeping Canada part of the Empire, and by defeating the more important enemy: Napoleon).
The only losers of the War were the Native Americans, who were defeated militarily and lost the British support.
