When I started reading this thread I had high hopes...then pictures came. It's great that you found a model you think will work: now you need to obliterate any sense of where it came from. The Leman Russ is a Char B1 Bis kit GW licensed from a model company.
I'm a little late but IMO aircraft in 40k need to be 1/35. Ground vehicles are closer to 1/48 but with the ridiculous size of GWs "25mm" Models and cartoonish oversized musculature of Orks 1/35 is the way to go. Maybe next time.
Cover up any semblance of what model that came from and think of the model as a skeleton on which to build. Also disregard physics, basic aerodynamic concepts, and logical engineering. That prop has to go. Make an over or underhang on the resulting hole and suggest an air intake or turbine. Then put a jet exhaust on the top of the tail. Square up the body and panel it hap hazardly and overhang it but tight and you should basically be there.

Rather than a historical kit, why not use robogear kits. Here's a plane I made from two of the "Sprut" kits and a spider.
It's not finished, but you get the idea. Not super cheap, as It took three 7 buck kits to make it. However it's still less than a GW kit and there are other robogear kits that are almost ready out of the box.

Not a bad model for 9 bucks (before shipping)

Good luck FINDING a 1/35 scale aircraft model kit.
They don't use that scale for aircraft. 1/35 is for ground-pounder stuff and equates closer to model railway scales.
1/32 (It does make a difference) is what is used for aircraft (it goes 1/144, 1/100 (rare), 1/72, 1/48, 1/32, 1/16, 1/8 usually).
Crew figures are larger than 1/35. Weapons are larger than 1/35. 1/48 WILL fit a seated space marine in the cockpit (which are NOT roomy at the best of times).

You should use 1:35 scale. 1:48 is too small. I have 1:35 T34s that Dondrekhan also uses for his Sturmkrieg army. Automatically Appended Next Post: chromedog wrote:@Orkimedes: You're after 1/48 generally for figure scale to look right for 40k.
1/72 is a little small (about 20mm scale - almost 1/4 scale out).
Yes, an F-86 Sabre, MiG-15 or EE-Lightning would all be acceptable starts to make a replacement.
I'm using a B-17 to make a Marauder (squaring off the flight surfaces - nothing says 'heresy in flight' like flight surfaces that look like they actually work).
I am going to use a B17 to make a Fliegenova Festeskaya, which I am going to write rules for. That's not too close to Fliegende Festung is it?

As a discussion grows in length, the probability of a comparison to Matt Ward or Gray Knights approaches one.

When it comes to historical aircraft used for 28mm gaming, it entirely depends on the vehicle that you're using as the base.
There are some 1/48 kits that look great. I recall a couple of Mil Hind copters that looked nice in a 40k setting. 1:48 copters in general tend to work well. Technically 1/48 is the closest standard aircraft scale to 28mm, but with heroic proportions (read "fat") of most sci-fi figs, it doesn't always work.
1/32 kits can also work, I think I've seen a 1/32 Sabre (other old jets also) that worked well as an ork fighta. However, beware, 1/32 kits can be absolutely massive. This is often the case with modern aircraft which often dwarf vintage aircraft.

I lol'd
But its so true. A vehicle that doesn't look like it rolled around in a junkyard covered in superglue just isn't orky.
Update: sorry have been busy building other thingy's one of which is a knight titan (deffy kitbash...mine looks like warhound scale chaos space marine, will start new thread on chaos and conversions.*prob in conversions area*..sorry OT),
I tend to agree it does look a bit "borrowed" instead of looted. in my case superglue in bits box would end up nid, marine, ork and tau (for the most part...i keep all bits in one plastic box, sprue in another and so on, trust me i got plety o bits, just need to find appropiate "orkyfied" pieces)
robogear isn't available here. (i've had bad exp with ebay etc so only buy local miniatures. that usually means i pay full price for stuff *i do however am assured all the parts/condition of the item*) i like the look of the "sentinel" looking robogear "models". i have x2 1:48 scale planes and x1 1:35 scale one (will edit this message and add pictures of PIP/ WIP)
