I think this issue is quite clearly written in the rules. The cannon rules on page 113, second bullet, under "Who's been hit?" are quite clear.

It is a good question. I would not count on it unless you have a lott of it. The TK necrotect with snakes or the common ward save are good examples. Also the hierophant 6+ regen has sometimes bought me another magic face witch is nice.
