Its a bit different though, he did it for money, not direct, personal gratification.

Also, generally we see seeking profit as being normal, we just frown on certain means of seeking it because we're terrible communists.

There's a good chance he will get caught speeding, or dropping litter, and be back inside for life, no parole.

If the kids died then yes, no release, but they didn't, nor did he intend them to do so. That makes a difference.

If murderers get a parole date this guy should also.

Where were you in 1976? Its a long times isnt it. Murderers and rapists often spend less time in jail than that, in fact the majority do. I find those crimes worse than kidnapping for profit.

This is why in the US when someone says "life imprisonment" many people don't believe they'll actually get life in prison.

Then again, it is California. What do you expect?

Is this guy looking for a job? I bet he would be one helluva salesperson. He seems to have the right level of ruthless determination and desire for money.
