How the heck is this guy getting out?

It was 36 years ago, would be one reason. No one died would be another. If anyone had actually died he would have been killed, but assuming he wasn't, he would never be released. Combine the amount of time incarcerated, the lack of death or sexual angle (it isn't like he was a pedophile), and the need to free up prison space and it seems more reasonable. If he isn't a danger to anyone, or at least no more than you or anyone else is, I don't see why we need to keep paying for him to stay in prison. Let him get a crappy job and live alone the rest of his life.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

He's the kind of guy that would bury 26 kids alive. I don't see any good coming from letting him out.

Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. For even the very wise cannot see all ends. - Harry Potter

He tried to extort money from the city and threatened the lives of people in doing so, and for that he paid for it with 36 years of his life and being a pariah until he dies. Not sure keeping him jail beyond this really does much good so I can see why they gave him parole. A twenty year old and a fifty six year old tend to be very different in many ways. Incarcerating people ad infinitum seems not to be a very good policy, or very just. He was a glorified extortionist, not a mass murdering pedophile, and I'm not sure it behooves us to treat him as such. We took his youth, middle age, and his future, I'm not sure what more we really need. I guess if you want to go and bite him you can do that, but then you would be put in jail and someone on the internet would decry the day they let a crazy man out that bites people.

I'm not saying kill the guy, but I won't be surprised seeing his name in the news associated with some other crime now that he's out.
I'll make this deal with you, if there's nothing in the news about him getting in some serious trouble in the next year, I'll not only shut up about letting him out, but praise him for becoming a model citizen.

If he does get into trouble, though, I get full "I told ya so rights".

I have to imagine that our options are a little greater than 'model citizen' and 'can't even wait a year to commit a crime'. These weren't life long criminals (well, they were in real estate...) before this so there isn't a history of criminal activity.

If you want to "I told you so" anyone it would be the state who determined this old geezer wasn't a threat anymore.

Anything less than endangering someone or getting caught stealing will qualify as model citizen for me in this guy's case.

As far as telling I told you so, agreed.

The guy buried 26 kids and their bus driver alive, and if wasn't for the driver getting them out of the situation, they all could well have been dead by suffocation or heat stroke. It's not like it was shoplifting he was convicted for.

Keeping him was a massive waste of money, who gives a feth what his country thinks about him.

"The Imperium is nothing if not willing to go to any lengths necessary. So the Trekkies are zipping around at warp speed taking small chucks out of an nigh-on infinite amount of ships, with the Imperium being unable to strike back. feth it, says central command, and detonates every vortex warhead in the fleet, plunging the entire sector into the Warp. Enjoy tentacle-rape, Kirk, we know Sulu will." -Terminus

I nkow this is probably a joke, but I'm still gonna have to slit your throat for misattributing that.

No hard feelings.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

While keeping him imprisoned would have violated Scots law.

No no, it's understandable. I debated whether to go with Obi Wan or Harry and settled on Harry. I made my choice and I accept it.

They didn't, they had a buried moving van with a hatch on the top they lowered them into. The driver used a stick to pry it open and managed to push the stuff weighing it down off allowing them to escape and lead to the capture of the kidnappers.

That's something I didn't consider, a "Ransom of Red Chief"angle. Maybe the driver wasn't so much trying to save the kids as escape from them.

You should vote for a representative who will attempt to bring in heavier sentences and deny parole to criminals.

Of course, there's no chance in hell that anyone's outlook on life or personality would change over the course of 36 years spent in a cell, he's definitely exactly the same person that went into prison, so the chance of rehabilitation in his case is nil.
