If the Astronomicon goes "off" it would make it way harder for IoM to get from one place to another, but on the other hand the nids would stop going towards holy terra.

Terra is a hive world with no means to feed its bloated populous without agri worlds supplying it. If the Astronomicon shut down, there'd be no need to invade, Terra would just fall under its own weight.

I think the upper classes would shut their gates with their hoarded food and let all the masses of the pilgrims starve and beg while they live in luxury, and with enough people to protect them there shouldn't be a successful revolution any time soon

Just a teaser. It means nothing.
Might just be hinting that Chaos is coming in the new starter set.
And on another note... Eye of Terror is one old book. Published the same year Mordheim came out.
That book is full of some of the silliest material ever in a BL book.
Failed astropaths being aloud to wander around the Imperium?
Wraithguard for sale?
"Blood for the blood god!" saves the universe from a gun spitting space tube?
Though I must admit I liked the "Rose cluster" and all the rose worlds made of roses with roses and some roses thrown in there. Beautiful setting for Dark Angels lol.
Oh and if anyone says marines can't fight in space without helmets... read this book.

It's always worth pointing out in these threads that the Emperor has nothing to do with the operation and sustainability of the Astronomicon. It is an entirely separate machine which operates independently and did so for hundreds to thousands of years before his internment.

Almost. The Golden Throne does not sustain the Astronomican. The Emperor has always and still does direct it, according to the fluff. But since the Emperor is sustained by the Throne and the Astronomican is sustained by the Emperor, one can say without losing too much of the meaning that the Astronomican depends on the Throne working properly.

Find that actual fluff. It doesn't exist outside of internet crackpottery.

Find that actual fluff. It doesn't exist outside of internet crackpottery. I think its either in RT or 3rd Edition that states while the Emperor does not power the Astronomican, He focuses its psychic light.

I should have left him there. He had served his purpose. He owed me nothing - yet he gave himself to me willingly. Why? I know not. He is nothing more than a pathetic human. An inferior race. A mon-keigh. But still I broke off my wings so that I might carry him easier. I took him from that place, into the snowstorm where our tracks will not be found. He is heavy. And he is dying. And he is slowing me down. But I will save him. Why? I know not. He is still warm. I can feel his blood ebbing across me. For every beat of his heart, another, slight spill of heat. The heat blows away on the winter wind. His blood is still warm. But fading. And I have spilled scarlet myself. The snow laps greedily at our footsteps and our lifeblood, covering them without a trace as we fade away.
'She sat on the corner, gulping the soup down, uncaring of the heat of it. They had grown more watery as of late she noted, but she wasn't about to beggar food from the Imperials or the "Bearers of the Word." Tau, despite their faults at least didn't have a kill policy for her race.' |

Found this on Lexi.... might help.
The "psychic light" of the Astronomican is beamed from Terra, from the Chamber of the Astronomican. The Astronomican is powered by ten thousand1-p140 psykers trained by the organisation; the omnipotent will of the Emperor constantly directs this energy across around fifty thousand light years of the galaxy. Although the Emperor does not provide the energy of the beacon, only he has the psychic power to handle such immense energy and direct it across the galaxy.

You'll notice the lack of citation on that.

RT rulebook Pg: 139 The Adeptus Astronomica
"The organisation comprises an administrative elite an a vast pool of young trainees who will one day join the ten-thousand strong corps that ACTUALLY POWERS THE ASTRONOMICON."
There. You can uncross your arms and relax your stance now.
BTW there was a thread a few months ago on citations. The point being, if you want citations... get them yourself. You're right, the internet isn't going anywhere, so find it yourself.

The point in question is what the Emperor has to do with the Astronomican, not Adeptus Astronomica.

As the quote says, he focuses it. What, exactly, this means, is anyone's guess, since the Astronomican is supposed to be, basically, a light-house for the Warp. I suppose he makes it a tight, bright spot rather than a diffuse glow, but that's just supposition on my part.
Maybe someone forgot to check the schedule and didn't realize that all ten thousand psykers were given a lunch break at exactly the same time. I've worked in call-centers where that's happened.

The quotation saying he directs it comes from Lexicanum and isn't backed by a citation. I looked, briefly, in my 40k books last night and indeed couldn't find support for it.

RT rulebook pg 138:
"...psykers whos bodies and souls are leeched of energy. This energy is projected by the mind of the Emperor in the form of the psychic beacon known as the Astronomican"
it goes on to say...
"Without the Emperor there would be little space travel and no protection in a hostile universe."

Hey, I'm down! This was exactly what I wanted to find browsing through my books last night. Good to know it's out there. We should alert someone to cite that claim in the Lexicanum entry now.

Easiest way to look at it...
Adeptus Astronomica = Batteries
Emperor = Flashlight
Astronomican = Light
